Two of the seven seats on the Grand Prairie Independent School District board of trustees were up for election on May 7, 2016. Place 6 was up for by-district general election. Incumbent Steve Pryor defeated former candidate Gloria Carrillo and newcomer Angela Luckey to retain the seat. In the at-large race for Place 7, former board member Burke Hall defeated fellow candidates Bessye Adams and Mike Riley. The Place 7 incumbent did not file for re-election.[1]

Voter and candidate information
The Grand Prairie ISD Board of Trustees is composed of seven members, five who are elected to three-year terms in specifically numbered seats, and two who are elected at large. Candidates file to run for a specific seat, but all voters in the school district are eligible to vote for every seat up for election. The seat in District 6 was scheduled for general election on May 7, 2016. At-large Place 7 was also scheduled for general election. There was no primary election.[2]
Candidates running for the school board had to be a United States citizen, a resident of Texas for at least 12 months, and a resident of the district for at least six months. Candidates also had to be 18 years of age or older and registered to vote.[2]

About the district
Grand Prairie Independent School District is located in Grand Prairie, a city located in portions of Dallas County, Ellis County and Tarrant County. According to the United States Census Bureau, Grand Prairie was home to 185,453 residents in 2014.[6] The district was the 45th-largest school district in the state in the 2013–2014 school year and served 27,740 students.[7]
Demographics
Grand Prairie underperformed in comparison to the rest of Texas in terms of higher education achievement in 2010-2014. The United States Census Bureau found that 23.0 percent of Grand Prairie residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 27.1 percent for Texas as a whole. The median household income in Grand Prairie was $55,336 compared to $52,576 for the state of Texas. The poverty rate in Grand Prairie was 15.5 percent compared to 17.2 percent for the entire state.[6]
