Three seats on the Greece Central School District Board of Education were up for general election on May 20, 2014.

Board Vice President Sean McCabe and newcomers Lisa Christoffel and Bill Maloney defeated challengers Richard Cunningham and Kristo Miettinen to win the three seats. Incumbent board members David Ferington and Joe Quirk did not file for re-election.[1]

Greece Central School District is located in Monroe County, New York. The county seat of Monroe County is Rochester, New York. Monroe County had a population of 749,606 residents, according to the United States Census Bureau in 2014.[2] Greece Central was the ninth-largest school district in New York, serving 11,871 students during the 2011-2012 school year.[3]

Demographics

In 2012, Monroe County had a higher percentage of residents with a bachelor's degree compared to the state overall. The United States Census Bureau reported that 35.5 percent of residents aged 25 and older in the county had earned a bachelor's degree, compared to 32.8 percent for New York. The median household income in Monroe County was $52,700, below the state median of $57,683. The poverty rate in the county was 14.6 percent, similar to the statewide rate of 14.9 percent.[2]

Voter and candidate information

As of the 2014 election, the Greece Central Board of Education consisted of nine members. All members were elected to three-year terms at-large by the district as a whole. There was no primary election, and the general election was held on May 20, 2014. Three seats were up for election in 2014.[5]

The filing deadline for school board candidates to get on the ballot in the general election was April 21, 2014. Candidates had to file nominating petitions with at least 63 legitimate signatures to get on the ballot.[6]

Additional elections on the ballot

This election shared the ballot with a budget proposal made by the Greece Central School District.[10] The 2014-2015 budget proposal totaled up to $210,162,828, which was a 2.26 percent increase from the 2013-2014 budget. Voters approved the budget proposal.[11]
