The Green Party Presidential Nominating Convention was held August 4-6, 2016, in Houston, Texas. This was the first Green Party convention held in the South and likely the latest nominating convention of any party.[1] The Green Party held its first national convention in Los Angeles, California, in August 1996.[1]
Convention details
The convention featured skill-building and issue-based workshops, speeches, national delegate meetings, committee and caucus meetings, and visits from international Greens.[2]
Different states have different methods for choosing Green Party delegates, including party primaries, caucuses, and state conventions. At the national convention, Green Party state delegations elected Jill Stein and Ajamu Baraka as their nominees for president and vice president on Saturday, August 6, 2016, following floor rules prescribed by the party.[3] The cumulative vote of the convention delegates determined the Green Party presidential nominee.[4]
Recognized presidential candidates
Candidates seeking the nomination must meet the Green Party's recognition criteria. Candidates must establish a campaign committee and website, demonstrate grassroots support within the Green Party, achieve fundraising milestones and meet other requirements.[5] The Green Party had officially recognized six 2016 candidates: William Kreml, Jill Stein, Sedinam Kinamo Christin Moyowasifza-Curry, Darryl Cherney, Kent Mesplay, and Elijah D. Manley.[6]
