Green Party candidates make good showing in Tuesday's special elections
October 19, 2011
On Tuesday, three states held special elections to fill four legislative vacancies. One was held for the Georgia House, one was held for the Massachusetts House, and two were held for the Minnesota State Senate. In both Massachusetts and Minnesota, candidates for the Green Party finished second, beating out other, major party candidates.[1] The following is a breakdown of Tuesday's elections:
- Georgia House District 43 (Runoff Election): John Carson (R) defeated Robert Lamutt (R) in a runoff election, winning by a 1,250-668 margin.[2] Carson will replace Bobby Franklin (R) who passed away in late-July 2011.[3]
- Massachusetts House 3rd Berkshire District: Patricia Farley-Bouvier (D) defeated Mark Jester (R), Mark Miller (G), and Pam Malumphy (I). Green Party candidate Mark Miller was a close second, losing to Farley-Bouvier by less than 200 votes (a 1,940-1,748 margin).[4] Farley-Bouvier will replace Christopher Speranzo (D) who resigned on July 13 to accept an appointment as new clerk magistrate of the Central Berkshire District Court.[5]
- Minnesota Senate District 46: Chris Eaton (D) defeated Cory Jensen (R) and Tom Reynolds (I), winning by a 3,374-1,782-292 margin.[6] Eaton will replace Linda Scheid (D) who passed away in June after a battle with cancer.[7]
- Minnesota Senate District 61: Jeff Hayden (D) defeated Bruce Lundeen (R), Farheen Hakeem (G), and Matt Brillhart (I). Green Party candidate Farheen Hakeem placed second but trailed Hayden by a 595-1856 margin.[8] Hayden will replace Linda Berglin (D) who retired after 38 years in the Minnesota Legislature.[9]
