Background
The Green Party of Maryland aims to promote Green principles and support Green candidates throughout the state. The party is one of four recognized political parties in Maryland. The group first gained ballot access in 2000 and maintained recognition through 2010. The party lost ballot access in 2011 when the Maryland State Board of Elections determined that a number of petition signatures submitted by the party were invalid. The Green Party of Maryland subsequently submitted enough valid signatures to regain ballot access in November 2012. [1][2]
Platform
The party's stated platform is composed of 4 main issues:[3]
- Drug policy
"The Green Party call for an end to the "war on drugs," legalization of drugs and for treating drug abuse as a health issue. The "war on drugs" has been an ill-conceived program that has wasted billions of dollars, misdirecting law enforcement resources away from apprehending and prosecuting violent criminals while crowding our prisons with non-violent drug offenders and disproportionately criminalizing youth of color." - Economic equality
"In our Green New Deal for Maryland, we urge the Maryland General Assembly to understand that we cannot truly move forward until the roots of inequality are pulled up and the seeds of a new, healthier, economy are planted." - Energy policy
"We advocate the phase-out of nuclear and coal-fired power plants. We oppose further oil and gas drilling or exploration on our public lands. We oppose industrial-scale biofuel production and biomass burning. We have no objection to small-scale biofuel production under local control. We call for a ban on hydraulic fracturing (fracking)." - Marriage equality
"The Green Party affirms the right of all individuals to freely choose intimate partners, regardless of their sex, gender, gender identity, or sexual orientation. The Green Party recognizes the equal rights of persons who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, intersex, transsexual, queer or transgender to housing, jobs, civil marriage, medical benefits, child custody, and in all areas of life including equal tax treatment."
