Howes ran in the 2012 election for Massachusetts State Senate District Third Middlesex District. He was defeated by Sandi Martinez in the Republican primary on September 6. Incumbent Susan Fargo (D) did not run for re-election.[1][2][3]

Howes believes that it is the role of government to ensure equality of opportunity to all of its citizens, rather than equality of outcome. He seeks to reform government pensions to solve unfunded liability problems.[4]
