Campaign themes
2016
Rodriguez issued the following statement regarding his bid for office:
“ | I have spent over 30 years working on political campaigns and fighting for civil rights, disability rights, education and women’s rights. Most recently I served as Congressman Raul Ruiz’ District Director and realized how much the State Assembly’s actions effect the daily lives of California. With my children grown, I am now ready to offer my commitment to public service to the people of the 42nd Assembly District.
I am running because we need a representative from this area that will go to Sacramento and be not only an advocate for the issues in our region, but more importantly someone that will achieve results. We will be the fastest growing region in the state over the next ten years and we have lacked a voice in Sacramento for far too long. My top 3 priorities will be: Mental Illness: In my opinion this is one of the biggest issues facing our state and nation. Treatment availability and different manners of treatment are abysmal in this region and state. Mental illness affects everyone. Not only the families that must deal with it but society as a whole. It is a major contributing factor to homelessness, drug and alcohol abuse, lost economic productivity and public safety issues. This is not just an economic and health issue, this is a moral issue that must be addressed. Education: As the parent of two grown children, I was very active in the education system. Education and full funding of education is one of my top priorities. We must not only work to retain and return laid off teachers, but provide increases in pay for the profession. Additionally we must look at innovative programs like career pathways that will enhance the education of our students. California must also work towards universal Pre-K. Salton Sea Restoration: Even though the Salton Sea is not in the 42nd District, the affects of the deterioration will reach the district. It’s potential for environmental and public health disasters as well as decreased economic development will affect the 42nd District. I will be a strong advocate working with other local, state and federal elected officials to place this issue on the top of Sacramento’s and the Federal Government’s agenda. [7] |
