Candidate Connection

Greg Sagan participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on February 26, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Greg Sagan's responses follow below.[2]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

1) Restore America's "safety net" of Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security

2) Protect the status of Robert Mueller and support his investigation into possible election tampering
3) Pass a law that invalidates the Citizens United decision[3][4]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

I am passionate about restoring fact- and science-based public policy because any other approach can only create effective policy by accident. I am passionate about extending single payer health care to everyone in the United States because competition in the health care industry drives costs up and not down. I am passionate about restoring international trade agreements such as NAFTA and TPP because cancelling these agreements will create financial calamity for a wide swath of American agriculture and will create higher prices for just about everything. I am for immigration reform because our fiscal viability depends on immigrants. I am for restoring political, economic and social justice for all because anything less than that creates privileged classes and constitutes the very kind of tyranny America was established to oppose.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[4]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Greg Sagan answered the following:

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

“In my walks, every man I meet is my superior in some way, and in that I learn from him.” R.W. Emerson[4]
Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?
The Bhagavad Gita.[4]
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
Honesty. Courage. Independence. Humility. Willingness to learn. Ability to admit error.[4]
What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?
I believe I have a strong sense of service to others. I am blunt, outspoken and knowledgeable about a wide range of subjects. I am predisposed toward practical solutions. I can't be bought.[4]
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
Be without fear in the face of your enemies. Be brave and upright that God may love thee. Speak the truth always, even if it leads to your death. Safeguard the helpless and do no wrong.[4]
What legacy would you like to leave?
Peace and progress.[4]
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?
Eisenhower was elected to his first term. I was five.[4]
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
I delivered flowers for a florist while in college. I held it about two years.[4]
What is your favorite book? Why?
Shogun. The main character, Blackthorne, lives on the edge of life, constantly aware of how close he is to annihilation and with only his knowledge and wits to sustain him.[4]
What is your favorite thing in your home or apartment? Why?
My favorite "thing" is a person, my wife Dianne. She makes if possible for me to be the best "me" I can be.[4]
What was the last song that got stuck in your head?
It's Probably Me by Sting[4]
What is something that has been a struggle in your life?
Learning to listen to others with the intention to understand instead of with the intention to judge, argue and "be right."[4]
What qualities does the U.S. House of Representatives possess that makes it unique as an institution?
All revenue bills originate there.[4]
Do you believe that it’s beneficial for representatives to have previous experience in government or politics?
It can be. It isn't necessarily so.[4]
What do you perceive to be the United States’ greatest challenges as a nation over the next decade?
Rooting out all vestiges of the Trump administration and agenda and removing from office all senators and congressmen linked to extremist groups such as the Nazi Party and the KKK.[4]
If you are not a current representative, are there certain committees that you would want to be a part of?
Agriculture; Ethics; Armed Services; Energy and Commerce; Foreign Affairs; Science, Space and Technology; Small Business; Veterans Affairs; Intelligence[4]
Do you believe that two years is the right term length for representatives?
It's too long for some, too short for others, and just right for the rest.[4]
What are your thoughts on term limits?
Term limits is not a question that can be addressed in isolation. Right now congressional committee assignments are based on a combination of qualities, including party majority and congressional tenure. Before I could favor term limits I would want to know what process would control committee assignments other than "winner does what he damned well pleases."[4]
What process do you favor for redistricting?
Politically neutral commissions, with members drawn from all recognized political parties and independent voters, with the power to determine congressional boundaries without the requirement of a majority vote in their state legislatures.[4]
If you are not currently a member of your party’s leadership in the U.S. House of Representatives, would you be interested in joining the leadership? If so, in what role?
I would not presume to seek such a role yet. On the other hand, if I were nominated for such a role then I would do my best to fulfill it.[4]
Is there a particular representative, past or present, whom you want to model yourself after?
No.[4]
Both sitting representatives and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you’ve heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?
I am aware of a number of stories about military members on active duty who are on food stamps. I am aware of a number of stories reporting upwards of 30,000 homeless veterans. I am aware of a number of stories about veterans committing suicide - over 20 a day. For a nation as rich as we are, for a nation spending around $700 billion a year on defense, these conditions for our service members and veterans are obscene.[4]
