Greg Wieman earned a bachelor's degree from Grand Valley State University in 1976, a graduate degree from the University of Michigan in 1985, and a Ph.D. from Eastern Michigan University in 2007. His career experience includes working as a public school educator.

A retired public school educator with 38 years of experience as a teacher, coach, sponsor/advisor, athletic director, assistant principal, principal (high, middle and elementary) and district superintendent.

• CCSD must provide a safe, cordial and productive learning environment in each school.
• Improved academic achievement and student success in all areas.
• Better recruitment and retention of quality teachers, administrators and staff.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

Common sense policies that improve student outcomes.

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

Willie Mays. Dreamed of playing major league baseball.

Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?

No.

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

Supporting decisions and practices that are for the common good.

What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?

Integrity, ability, commitment and professionalism.

What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?

Integrity, ability, commitment and professionalism.

What legacy would you like to leave?

That I helped preserve and improved public education.

What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?

The Kennedy assassination. Nine.

What was your very first job? How long did you have it?

Paperboy. Three years.

What is your favorite book? Why?

The Autobiography of Malcolm X. Because of his true prediction that he would be assassinated before the book was published.

If you could be any fictional character, who would you want to be?

Superman.

What was the last song that got stuck in your head?

It changes each morning when I awake.

What is something that has been a struggle in your life?

I have been blessed with happy and productive life.

What is the primary job of a school board member in your view?

Provide oversight and require accountability over the district. Approve common sense policies and procedures that improve student outcomes. Be available to listen to concerns from students, parents and the community.

Who are your constituents?

The students, parents and community members in District G.

How would you support the diverse needs of your district’s students, faculty, staff, and community?

Support high expectations for behavior and achievement of all students.

How will you build relationships with members of the broader community? Which groups, organizations, stakeholders will you specifically target?

By being open to interactions with all stakeholders in the district. Balancing the needs and concerns of all factions is a primary responsibility of an effective board member.

Do you believe it is important to intentionally recruit with the aim of diversifying the district’s faculty, staff, and administration? If so, what would be your policy to achieve this?

It is important to seek and recruit quality candidates from across the country. Targeting quality candidates representing diverse backgrounds is a noble aim and a competitive endeavor. One way, would be to have a job recruitment event on behalf of the district at every HBCU.

What issues get in the way of quality education? How would you address these obstacles?

A low or altered expectation for appropriate school behavior and academic effort based on socio-economic background. Reduce the reliance on standardized test scores as the predominant measure of achievement.

What constitutes good teaching? How will you measure this? How will you support advanced teaching approaches?

Engagement between students and teachers. Observation and performance results of the students. There are always more innovative instructional methods but they do not always improve learning.

Sound practice begins with effective classroom management and mutually respectful relationships. If those are in place, individual student potential will be maximized.

In what areas would you like to expand curriculum? For example, do you see a need for advanced technical training or apprenticeships? What sort of innovative programming would you advance if given the opportunity?

Every student does not need to go to college to be successful. Middle and high schools should provide career exploration opportunities and help each student determine their passions and abilities. Technical and vocational training should be available to all qualified students. Internships with local businesses and trade associations should be explored.

What strategies or plans would you advance to ensure the schools are properly funded?

Lobby on behalf of the Board and district for appropriate funding. levels. This work can be done in cooperation with teacher unions and other educational entities.

What principles drive your policies for safety in schools?

Respect and effort. Behavior is either respectful or it is not. Effort is present or it is not. There should be no tolerance disrespectful or unproductive behavior.

How might you support the mental health needs of students/faculty/staff?

Ensure that there are effective counselors and counseling services available.

What role do you imagine technology playing in (and outside) the classroom in the future? How would you prepare the district for this?

Technology is an ever expanding realm. The district should remain flexible.

What are your views on how to address schooling during pandemic times?

The foremost responsibility of the district is to protect the safety and well-being of students, teachers and staff.

What will you do to build a relationship with parents in the district? What plans do you have to be inclusive of parental involvement?

Help build a district philosophy that parent support is earned, not expected. To help guide parents and other stakeholders to a path of successful resolution for concerns and issues. Help shape appropriate district responses and the rationale behind decisions.
