Campaign themes

2016

Deets' campaign website listed the following themes for 2016:

Limit School Initiatives
We need to thoroughly implement a reasonable number of initiatives at a given time.

Too many current district initiatives are being implemented without in depth research, parent/community/staff input, comprehensive staff development and proper follow up. Examples include four year old kindergarten, grading, homework, our common core standards and iPad use. Current practices are causing lack of understanding and unengaged stakeholders.

Safe and Orderly Schools
Safe and orderly schools should be a very high priority.

We need to continue to improve safety in our schools so that all of our students, staff and parents can feel secure each day. No student should be allowed to disrupt the learning environment of their peers. Existing practices and policies should be reviewed and revised as needed. Additional collaboration with our local police department should be proactively pursued by our school administrators.

Accountability and Fiscal Responsbility
We need accountability and fiscal responsibility at all levels.

The school board needs to set the example and ensure the implementation of high standards in our district for accountability, ethics, respect, collaboration, transparency and fiscal responsibility. Community members, parents, students and district employees at all levels should help establish such standards. Additional funds to address student needs at all levels should come from programs that are not working and from administrative and supervisory positions that could be eliminated.

Bilingual Graduates
Bilingual instruction should begin in the early elementary grades.

All of our students in the School District of Waukesha should have the opportunity to graduate as bilingual, not just a select few. Students leaving our high schools who are bilingual will have a major competitive edge when compared to their peers from other districts.

Early Intervention
Early intervention is a cost effective and common sense approach. Excessive testing is unnecessary.

At a minimum, our students need average math, reading and writing skills by the end of third grade. Limited testing is appropriate. Currently our students are over tested especially at the elementary level. We should be teaching them what they have yet to master instead of administering excessive tests to determine what we already know they haven't achieved. Too many resources are being used in our district to intervene at the middle and high school levels after students have experienced ongoing failure. Additionally average class size should be 25 students.
