Gurbir Grewal
Gurbir Grewal was the 61st attorney general of New Jersey. He was nominated to the position on December 12, 2017, by then-Governor-elect Phil Murphy (D), and was confirmed by the New Jersey State Senate with a vote of 29-0 on January 16, 2018. Grewal's confirmation made him the first Sikh to hold the office of attorney general in the United States.[1][2] He succeeded Christopher Porrino, who served as a nonpartisan attorney general from 2016 to 2018.
On June 29, 2021, Grewal announced that he would be joining the Securities and Exchange Commission as director of enforcement effective July 26.[3] He resigned from his position as attorney general on July 16, 2021.[4]
Biography
Grewal previously worked as an assistant U.S. attorney for New Jersey and as a prosecutor in the Eastern District of New York. Prior to his nomination to serve as the attorney general of New Jersey, Grewal worked as a prosecutor in Bergen County, New Jersey.[1]
