I'm Gwenn Burud, and I'm running again because I know we can win. There are more Democrats in SD9 if only we'd get everyone to show up to vote. Last time I ran, I took a 30-point district and turned it into an 8-point one! Since that run in 2018, DFW has brought in SO MANY new people. We need the funds to register and turn out our district so I can be a real representative for the families of Texas's 9th Senate District. I'm a public education teacher that works with children who are deaf/heard-of-hearing and their families. Without public education, these families would be on their own to unravel the complexities of raising a child with special needs. We must refocus our communities around the great equalizer of public education by fully funding all aspects of public education--and I can do this without raising your taxes by simply reprioritizing the state's budget. The foundation of the American Dream is public education, and we must make Texas a more competitive state by ensuring all of our children have access to the highest quality education. Please read my website for more about my plans and reach out if you have any questions!
  • Education Finance Reform - As a public school teacher, I'm committed to making our children a priority this session. This begins with addressing our broken funding formula.
  • Healthcare - Your socioeconomic status should not determine whether or not you receive the care you need. The costs of healthcare have continued to rise, while Texas remains the most uninsured State in the country. We must do better because lives are on the line.
  • Economy - A prosperous Texas is a well educated Texas. For this reason, we must invest in our public schools.
I believe that healthcare should be a right for all Texans. This is not the belief of our current leadership. I call on the Governor to expand Medicaid in our State so that low-income Texans have access to affordable care.

Candidate Connection

Gwenn Burud completed Ballotpedia's Candidate Connection survey. The survey questions appear in bold and are followed by Burud's responses.

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

Education Finance Reform - As a public school teacher, I'm committed to making our children a priority this session. This begins with addressing our broken funding formula. Healthcare - Your socioeconomic status should not determine whether or not you receive the care you need. The costs of healthcare have continued to rise, while Texas remains the most uninsured State in the country. We must do better because lives are on the line. Economy - A propererous Texas is a well educated Texas. For this reason, we must invest in our public schools.

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

I believe that healthcare should be a right for all Texans. This is not the belief of our current leadership. I call on the Governor to expand Medicaid in our State so that low-income Texans have access to affordable care.

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

I have always found the life of Barbara Jordan to be my greatest inspiration. She was quite the trailblazer, creating the path for many by rising to heights not thought possible. Her life is a testament to the values we all seek to achieve: courage, honesty, humility and perseverance.

Do you believe it’s beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.

Progress happens when we have a mutual respect for one another.
