H. Bruce Williams is a judge on the South Carolina Court of Appeals. He was elected to this position by the South Carolina General Assembly in May 2004, effective June 3, 2004.[1] He was re-elected to a new six-year term by the South Carolina State Legislature in 2017.[2]
Williams was elected chief judge of the South Carolina Court of Appeals on February 2, 2022.[3]
Williams was one of five candidates under consideration by the state's Judicial Merit Selection Commission to fill the South Carolina Supreme Court vacancy created by Chief Justice Jean Toal's December 2015 retirement.[4]
Education
Williams received his bachelor's degree from Wofford College in 1978 and his J.D. from the University of South Carolina Law School in 1982.[1]
Career
Williams began his legal career as an attorney in private practice. From 1992 to 1995, he also worked part-time as an associate town judge for the Town of Irmo. In May 1995, he was elected by the state general assembly to the Family Court of the 5th Judicial Circuit. He held this position until May 2004, when he was elected to the South Carolina Court of Appeals.[1]
