My name is Hans Herberg, and I am running for Governor of New Jersey in the 2025 election. I graduated from Cranford High School in 2006 and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice from Mitchell College in 2011. As a lifelong New Jersey resident, I’ve seen firsthand the challenges our families and businesses face, and I’m committed to leading our state in a new direction.

I’m running for governor because I believe in smaller government, lower taxes, and repealing the state income tax to ease the financial burden on New Jerseyans. I’m a strong supporter of law enforcement and will ensure our police officers have the resources they need to keep our communities safe.

I am dedicated to protecting parental rights, including medical freedom and expanding school choice so families have more control over their children’s education. My values of honesty, integrity, family, faith, and hard work will guide my leadership.

I’m not running to serve the political elite; I’m running to represent you, the people of New Jersey. Together, we can restore prosperity, safety, and opportunity to our state.
  • Smaller Government and Fiscal Responsibility "I am committed to reducing the size of government and cutting unnecessary taxes, including repealing the state income tax. New Jersey residents deserve more financial freedom, and I will work to make state government more efficient and accountable to the people."
  • Support for Law Enforcement and Public Safety "Our communities need strong leadership that supports law enforcement and ensures our police officers have the resources they need to keep us safe. I will always prioritize public safety and stand by our brave men and women in uniform."
  • Empowering Families with Parental Rights and School Choice "I believe in protecting parental rights, especially when it comes to education and medical freedom. Parents should have the power to make decisions for their children, whether it’s about their health or their schooling. I’ll work to expand school choice so families can choose the best education for their children."
I’m passionate about reducing government size and cutting taxes, including repealing the state income tax, to provide financial relief to New Jersey residents. I strongly support law enforcement, ensuring officers have the resources needed to keep our communities safe. I’m committed to empowering parents through school choice and medical freedom, giving families more control over their children’s education and healthcare decisions. I also advocate for right-to-work policies, protecting individual choice in the workplace.
I look up to individuals who embody hard work, integrity, and a commitment to serving others—qualities that are central to the kind of leader I aspire to be. One person I greatly admire is Ron Paul. His unwavering dedication to individual freedom, limited government, and personal responsibility resonates deeply with my own beliefs. His example of sticking to principles and always advocating for the people, even in the face of political pressure, is something I strive to emulate in my own life and career.

I also look up to my parents, who have been my greatest supporters. They fought for my education and never gave up on me, even when others doubted my potential because of my learning disabilities. Their perseverance, sacrifice, and belief in me taught me the importance of fighting for what’s right, no matter the odds.

I want to follow the example of leaders who prioritize the needs of the people, work tirelessly for the greater good, and lead with honesty and integrity—values I hold dear in my platform.
Absolutely! Here’s how you can put it together as your own answer:

To understand my political philosophy, I would recommend exploring the works of Ron Paul and Rand Paul, as they align closely with my values of limited government, individual freedom, and personal responsibility.

A great starting point is "The Revolution: A Manifesto" by Ron Paul, which outlines his commitment to liberty, free markets, and reducing federal power. This resonates with my stance on cutting taxes, reducing government intervention, and giving individuals more freedom to make decisions for themselves.

Additionally, Rand Paul’s "The Case for Liberty" dives into the importance of personal freedoms, limiting government control, and advocating for policies that empower individuals. His views on education and healthcare, particularly regarding school choice and medical freedom, align closely with my own priorities.

For anyone interested in the economic principles that underpin my vision, I recommend "Economics in One Lesson" by Henry Hazlitt. This book emphasizes the importance of free markets and the negative consequences of government overreach, which directly ties into my desire to repeal the state income tax and create an environment where businesses and families can thrive.

Finally, Frédéric Bastiat’s "The Law" offers timeless wisdom on the need to protect individual rights and the dangers of excessive government power, which is a principle I firmly believe in.

These works reflect my belief in fiscal responsibility, individual freedoms, and a government that serves the people, not the political elite.
The most important characteristics for an elected official are honesty, integrity, and a strong work ethic. A leader must be transparent with the public, always doing what’s best for the people, not for political gain. Accountability is key, ensuring decisions reflect the needs of constituents, not special interests. Additionally, an elected official must prioritize family values, faith, and community, grounding decisions in principles that strengthen our state. Ultimately, a good leader is someone who listens, is committed to service, and works tirelessly to improve the lives of their fellow citizens.
I believe my commitment to hard work, integrity, and resilience are the key qualities that would make me a successful officeholder. I’ve faced challenges in my life, from overcoming learning disabilities to adjusting to life in both Norway and the U.S., and each experience has taught me the importance of perseverance and determination. These lessons have shaped my approach to leadership—focused on tackling problems head-on and never backing down from doing what’s right, even when it’s difficult.

I also value honesty and accountability in all aspects of my life. As someone who believes in smaller government and fiscal responsibility, I will work to ensure that the people of New Jersey have a government that operates with transparency, uses taxpayer dollars wisely, and serves their best interests.

Additionally, my experience as a leader in campus safety and my education in criminal justice have given me a deep understanding of law enforcement, public safety, and the need for community-based solutions to challenges. These experiences also taught me the importance of listening to others, collaborating, and finding common ground to move forward, all of which are essential for effective governance.

Ultimately, I believe my blend of personal experience, principled leadership, and commitment to service would allow me to be a governor who truly represents the values and needs of the people of New Jersey.
The core responsibilities of an elected official, especially the Governor of New Jersey, are to serve the people, protect their rights, and prioritize the state's well-being. This includes making fiscally responsible decisions, ensuring public safety, and upholding the values of honesty, integrity, and transparency. A governor must listen to constituents, lead by example, and work to create policies that promote economic growth, educational opportunities, and individual freedoms. Ultimately, the governor's duty is to strengthen the state, support families, and ensure a prosperous future for all New Jerseyans.
The legacy I would like to leave is one of service, integrity, and empowerment. I want to be remembered as a leader who always put the people of New Jersey first, worked to create a smaller, more efficient government, and championed individual freedoms.

I hope to leave behind a state where families feel financially secure, businesses thrive, and children have access to quality education that prepares them for success. I want to be someone who fought for parental rights, worked to repeal the state income tax, and made New Jersey a place where people could keep more of their hard-earned money.

But more than anything, I want my legacy to reflect a commitment to honesty and accountability in government. I want people to look back and see that I led with integrity, never compromising on doing what’s right, even when it wasn’t easy.

Ultimately, I want to leave a legacy of a state that is stronger, more prosperous, and more free—where future generations can thrive in a government that works for them, not against them.
The first historical event I remember was when I returned to the United States in 1995 after living in Norway for several years. I was born on October 13, 1987, and moved to Norway shortly after. During my time there, I was told that I might not succeed due to my learning disabilities. However, my parents fought tirelessly for my education and well-being, ensuring I had the support I needed to thrive.

Returning to the United States, I faced challenges adjusting, but I was proud to be both a Norwegian and an American. I graduated from Cranford High School in 2006, earning my diploma, and later went on to graduate in 2011 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice. My journey was a testament to perseverance and the unwavering support of my family and friends. Achieving those milestones made them, especially my parents, incredibly proud.

This experience has shaped my view on the importance of education, overcoming obstacles, and the power of fighting for opportunity—values I hold dear in my campaign today.
My very first job was as a Lead Student Safety Officer at Mitchell College during my time there from 2006 to 2011. In this role, I was responsible for maintaining a safe environment on campus, assisting with security protocols, and supporting both students and staff. It taught me the importance of responsibility, communication, and leadership—skills that I still rely on today.

Working in campus safety also gave me a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by communities in maintaining security while respecting individual rights. It reinforced my commitment to supporting law enforcement and ensuring that public safety is a top priority, whether on campus or across New Jersey.
One of my favorite books is “The Revolution: A Manifesto” by Ron Paul. It resonates with me because it emphasizes the importance of individual liberty, limited government, and fiscal responsibility—values that I hold dear. Ron Paul’s focus on personal freedom and a government that stays out of the way of its citizens really shaped my approach to public policy.

I also appreciate how the book challenges conventional political thinking and encourages readers to critically examine the role of government in their lives. It aligns with my belief that we need to prioritize personal responsibility, reduce government overreach, and empower individuals to succeed on their own terms.
If I could be any fictional character, I’d probably choose Captain America. Not only is he a symbol of courage, integrity, and fighting for what’s right, but he’s also someone who always stands up for others, no matter the odds. His dedication to serving the greater good and his ability to lead by example are qualities I admire. Plus, who wouldn’t want to have a shield that can deflect anything?

I think the combination of his strength, character, and commitment to doing what’s right would be a great example to follow as a leader.
The last song that got stuck in my head was “Eye of the Tiger” by Survivor. It’s such an energetic and motivating song, and it really gets me in the zone when I need to stay focused and keep pushing forward. The drive and determination in that song resonate with me, especially when I'm working toward my goals, whether in my campaign or in life. It’s a reminder to stay strong and keep fighting, no matter the challenges.
One of the biggest struggles in my life has been dealing with my learning disabilities. Growing up, I was told that I wouldn’t succeed, especially when I was living in Norway, where the education system wasn’t as accommodating for students like me. The challenges were tough, but my parents never gave up on me. They fought for my right to a proper education and made sure I had the support I needed to overcome these hurdles.

Despite the doubts others had, I worked hard, pushed through the difficulties, and graduated from Cranford High School in 2006, then went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice in 2011. The struggle taught me the value of perseverance, hard work, and the importance of advocating for yourself and others who face similar challenges.

This experience has shaped my approach to leadership and policy—always working to ensure that every individual, no matter their challenges, has the chance to succeed. It has also reinforced my commitment to education reform, as I know how important it is for every student to have the support they need to reach their full potential.
In New Jersey, the most important responsibilities of the governor are fiscal management, public safety, and educational reform.

Fiscal management is critical—New Jersey has one of the highest tax burdens in the country, and I believe it’s the governor’s duty to rein in spending and ensure that taxpayer dollars are being used wisely. This includes repealing the state income tax, cutting wasteful spending, and creating a more efficient government that works for the people.

Public safety is another top priority. As governor, I would strongly support law enforcement and ensure that police officers have the resources they need to protect communities. The governor must ensure that crime is tackled effectively and that citizens feel safe in their own homes and neighborhoods.

Finally, education is key. I’m passionate about giving parents more control over their children’s education through school choice and ensuring that every child in New Jersey has access to quality education. The governor should work to expand opportunities for families, whether it’s through public, charter, or private schools, and protect parental rights in making decisions about their children’s education.

These responsibilities are essential to creating a strong, prosperous, and safe New Jersey, and they align with the values I believe are most important for our state’s future.
If it were my choice, I believe the governor should have a strong role in the state budgeting process, as it is critical to ensuring that taxpayer dollars are spent efficiently and effectively. While the legislature should play an essential part in reviewing and approving the budget, the governor must provide clear leadership in setting priorities for how funds are allocated.

As governor, I would ensure that the budget reflects the values of fiscal responsibility, efficiency, and accountability. This means pushing for a budget that prioritizes essential services like public safety and education, while cutting unnecessary programs and reducing wasteful spending. I believe the governor should have the power to propose a budget that aligns with the goals of lower taxes and smaller government, and work with the legislature to ensure it reflects the needs of the people.

Additionally, the governor should have the authority to veto spending that doesn’t meet these criteria or doesn’t align with the state's long-term economic health. Transparency throughout the budgeting process is key, and the people should know exactly how their tax dollars are being spent.

Ultimately, the governor must take an active role in managing the state’s finances, ensuring that the budget fosters growth, supports public safety, and enables New Jersey families and businesses to thrive.
In New Jersey, the line-item veto power is an essential tool for ensuring that taxpayer money is spent wisely and efficiently. My philosophy on using this power is simple: I will use it to eliminate wasteful spending, prioritize essential services, and ensure that the budget aligns with the values of fiscal responsibility and small government.

When I review the state budget, I will look for unnecessary programs, pork-barrel spending, and excessive funding for initiatives that do not directly benefit the people of New Jersey. If there are items in the budget that do not meet the needs of the people or contribute to the state’s long-term economic health, I will not hesitate to veto those line items.

At the same time, I believe in supporting critical areas like public safety, education, and infrastructure—areas that directly impact the daily lives of New Jerseyans. My goal would be to protect funding for programs that make a real difference while eliminating waste in other parts of the budget.

The key to using the line-item veto effectively is ensuring that it is a tool for responsible governance—not just a way to push a political agenda. Every veto will be made with the goal of creating a more efficient, transparent, and fiscally sound government that works for the people.
The ideal relationship between the governor and the state legislature is one of collaboration, respect, and accountability. While the legislature has the constitutional responsibility to pass laws and approve the budget, the governor must provide clear leadership and direction, ensuring that policies align with the needs and values of the people.

I believe in working closely with the legislature to craft legislation that is both fiscally responsible and in the best interest of New Jersey families. That means open communication, mutual respect, and a willingness to work across party lines to find common ground on key issues such as tax reform, education, and public safety.

At the same time, the governor must be a strong advocate for the people. If the legislature proposes policies that are inefficient, overly burdensome, or against the interests of New Jerseyans, the governor must use their veto power and work with lawmakers to make necessary changes. It’s about finding a balance between collaboration and holding the legislature accountable for decisions that impact the state’s future.

Ultimately, the governor’s role is to ensure that the legislature stays focused on what truly matters for the state’s growth, prosperity, and safety. By maintaining an effective and professional relationship, we can create policies that work for all New Jerseyans.
What I love most about New Jersey is its diversity—both in people and in landscape. From the bustling cities to the quiet, beautiful suburbs and shorelines, New Jersey has something unique to offer everyone. The people of New Jersey are hardworking, resilient, and have a strong sense of community and family. It’s the kind of place where neighbors help neighbors, and there’s a shared commitment to making the state a better place for future generations.

I also love New Jersey’s rich history and innovation. We’ve contributed so much to the nation—whether in technology, industry, or culture—and we have a strong foundation for continuing that legacy. As a proud New Jersey resident, I am passionate about ensuring that our state remains a place where families, businesses, and individuals can thrive, and where we protect the core values that make New Jersey special: freedom, hard work, and community spirit.
New Jersey faces several significant challenges over the next decade, and addressing them will require bold leadership and common-sense solutions.

The high cost of living and taxes is one of our biggest obstacles. With some of the highest property taxes and a state income tax that burdens families and businesses, New Jerseyans are struggling to make ends meet. Repealing the state income tax and cutting unnecessary spending will be key to reducing the financial burden on residents and making New Jersey more affordable for everyone.

Another challenge is public safety. While New Jersey is generally safe, we must ensure that our law enforcement agencies are properly supported and equipped to tackle crime, especially in urban areas. Strengthening community-police relations and providing the resources our officers need will be critical to ensuring our families feel safe and secure.

Lastly, we must address the issue of education. Our public schools must provide a quality education to every child, regardless of background or neighborhood. Expanding school choice and giving parents more control over their children's education will ensure that all children have access to opportunities that prepare them for success in the future.

Tackling these challenges head-on is essential for ensuring New Jersey's continued prosperity, and I’m committed to leading the way with fiscal responsibility, public safety, and educational empowerment as top priorities.
lots to choose from lol.
The governor of New Jersey should only use emergency powers under clear, well-defined circumstances that are necessary to protect public safety and well-being. Emergency powers should never be used to extend the reach of government beyond what is essential or to infringe on individual freedoms.

In cases of natural disasters, such as hurricanes or major flooding, or public health emergencies that pose an immediate threat to the safety and health of New Jerseyans, the governor should have the authority to act swiftly and decisively to protect lives and ensure access to necessary resources.

However, the use of emergency powers must always be temporary, with clear limits, and subject to oversight by the legislature. After the initial response phase, it is critical that powers be returned to the legislature, ensuring the people’s voice is heard and that any continued actions are backed by legislative approval.

I firmly believe in balancing swift action with respect for individual rights, and that emergency powers should never be used as a tool for overreach or unnecessary restrictions on the freedoms of New Jerseyans. It’s about protecting the state’s safety and well-being while upholding the principles of freedom, accountability, and transparency.
I believe that financial transparency and government accountability are absolutely essential for restoring trust in our state government. New Jersey residents deserve to know exactly how their tax dollars are being spent, and they should have full access to public financial information. This ensures that government actions align with the public’s best interests and fosters an environment of trust.

As Governor, I would work to make state budgeting and spending more transparent by implementing clear, accessible reports and audits. I’d also push for stricter oversight on how taxpayer money is allocated to ensure it is being used efficiently and effectively.

Government accountability means holding officials at every level responsible for their decisions and actions. I support measures that would make it easier for New Jerseyans to voice concerns, review government spending, and hold politicians accountable for any misuse of power or funds. Whether it's reducing wasteful spending, cutting unnecessary programs, or increasing public access to state financial data, we must work together to ensure that the people’s money is being spent responsibly.
A state ballot initiative process, which allows citizens to propose and vote on laws directly, could offer both advantages and challenges for New Jersey.

Advantages:

Increased citizen engagement: The ballot initiative process would empower New Jerseyans by giving them a direct voice in shaping policy on issues that matter to them, fostering a sense of ownership over state decisions.
Direct democracy: It can help bypass gridlock in the legislature, allowing for quicker action on issues that might be delayed or ignored by lawmakers.
Reinforcing accountability: Citizens would be able to hold lawmakers accountable by passing laws they believe are in the public’s best interest, rather than relying on politicians who may have conflicting interests.
Challenges:

Potential for poorly designed laws: While the initiative process allows for direct democracy, it also risks passing poorly crafted or overly broad laws that could have unintended consequences. Complex policy decisions might not be best suited for a yes/no vote without proper legislative review.
Special interest influence: Ballot initiatives can be vulnerable to heavy spending by special interest groups, which could sway public opinion on key issues, leading to laws that don’t necessarily reflect the will of the majority.

Over-simplification of issues: Some policies are too complex for a simple ballot question. Important nuances could be lost in the process, and citizens might vote on issues without fully understanding the long-term implications.
To me, being the Governor means being the chief servant of the people, entrusted with the responsibility of leading the state with integrity and accountability. As the top executive authority, the governor must set a clear vision for the state, ensure that state agencies are functioning efficiently, and work to create policies that benefit the citizens, not the political elites.

A governor must prioritize fiscal responsibility, ensuring that taxpayer money is spent wisely and that the government operates within its means. It’s about making decisions that lead to long-term prosperity, safety, and opportunity for all New Jerseyans.

The governor must also be a leader who listens to the concerns of the people, values their input, and takes action to address the most pressing issues. From supporting law enforcement to empowering parents with choices in education, a governor should stand firmly on principles of individual freedom, limited government, and community values.

Being the top executive authority means leading with a sense of honesty, integrity, and a strong work ethic—constantly striving to improve the lives of the people and create a state where families, businesses, and individuals can thrive.
