Heading into the election, Ballotpedia rated this race as safely Democratic. Incumbent John Yarmuth (D), the only Democratic candidate to file in the race, won re-election to his sixth term in 2016. He faced Harold Bratcher (R) and Everett Corley (Forefathers Party) in the general election on November 8, 2016. Yarmuth was unopposed in the Democratic primary, while Bratcher defeated Everett Corley and Robert DeVore Jr. to win the Republican nomination. The primary elections took place on May 17, 2016.[1][2][3]

Campaign themes

2016

The following issues were listed on Bratcher's campaign website. For a full list of campaign themes, click here.

  • Economy: Bring jobs back to America and focus on living wages for all Americans.
  • Tax Reform: Restructure our tax code system to benefit the middle class as well as corporations to make them more competitive in the global market. Keep more jobs in America.
  • Campaign Reform: Focusing on term limits: By setting term limits we will keep the political landscape changing to help get rid of the “good ole boy” system we currently have in place. This will continually bring in fresh ideals to our political system and will also enforce the current politicians be more proactive to help our nation. We also need to hold all current politicians accountable and responsible to make roll call and read the legislation before they vote and require them to vote.
  • Second Amendment: We have to protect our second amendment rights and not allow the government to take that away from us.
  • Tort Reform: We need to allow the courts to stream line and throw out frivolous law suits and court cases so they can focus more on the serious issues.
