Harold R. DeMoss, Jr. was a federal judge with the United States Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit. He joined the court on December 2, 1991, after being nominated by President George H.W. Bush (R). He assumed senior status on July 1, 2007. DeMoss retired from the court on April 16, 2015.[1]

DeMoss died on April 29, 2020.[1]

Early life and education

A native of Houston, Texas, DeMoss graduated from Rice Institute with his bachelor's degree in 1952 and from the University of Texas School of Law with his LL.B. in 1955.[1]

DeMoss served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957.[1]

DeMoss was nominated to the United States Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit by President George H.W. Bush on June 27, 1991, to a seat vacated by Judge Jerre Williams. The American Bar Association rated DeMoss Unanimously Qualified for the nomination.[2] Hearings on DeMoss' nomination were held before the United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary on September 26, 1991, and his nomination was reported by then-U.S. Sen. Joseph Biden (D-Del.) on October 31, 1991. DeMoss was confirmed by the unanimous consent of the U.S. Senate on November 27, 1991, and he received his commission on December 2, 1991. DeMoss assumed senior status on July 1, 2007.[1][3] DeMoss was succeeded in this position by Judge Catharina Haynes.
