Harold Hamm is the founder, chairman, and CEO of independent oil producer Continental Resources.[1]

During the period of transition between the Obama and Trump administrations, Hamm was reported to be in consideration for a high-level appointment in the Trump administration. Politico reported that Hamm was being considered for energy secretary or secretary of the interior.[2]

Career

Hamm began his career in the oil industry at age 16 as a gas station employee in his native Oklahoma. He moved on to working on oil tanks at a refinery and then began a trucking company that hauled water to and from the Oklahoma oil fields.[3]

In 1967, Hamm founded Continental Resources, an independent oil producer headquartered in Oklahoma City. Continental Resources also operates out of Oklahoma, North Dakota, and Montana. As of November 2016, Hamm remained active as chairman and CEO of Continental Resources.[1][4]

In 2008, Hamm co-founded the Domestic Energy Producers Alliance (DEPA). He serves as its chairman.[5] The DEPA is an organization made up of 25 trade associations related to oil and gas production. The DEPA represents about 10,000 individuals and companies that it categorizes as "domestic independents," which are "non-integrated companies that operate almost exclusively in the domestic exportation and production (E&P) segment of the industry."[6] The DEPA advocates for tax provisions that benefit domestic independents as well as regulations that support independent producers, royalty owners, and segments of the oil and gas service industry.[7]
