Primary: He was defeated in the Democratic primary on June 3, 2014, receiving 18.5 percent of the vote. He competed against Marie Ward and Sandy Barnhart Chavez.

Atencio is a graduate of the University of New Mexico and the University of New Mexico Law School.[3]

Atencio has spent 25 years as a trial attorney, including 20 years as an adoption attorney.[3]
