Harold Vietor was a federal judge for the United States District Court for the Southern District of Iowa. He joined the court in 1979 after being nominated by President Jimmy Carter and served as an active and senior judge on the court until his death on July 23, 2016. From 1985 to 1992, Vietor was chief judge of the district court.[1]

Early life and education

A native of Parkersburg, Iowa, Vietor graduated from the University of Iowa with his bachelor's degree in 1955 and from the University of Iowa College of Law with his J.D. in 1958.[1]

Military career

Vietor served in the United States Navy from 1952 to 1954.[1]

Southern District of Iowa

Vietor was nominated by President Jimmy Carter on March 15, 1979, to a new seat created by 92 Stat. 1629. Vietor was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on May 10, 1979, and he received his commission the next day. Vietor served as the chief judge of the Southern District of Iowa from 1985 to 1992 before later assuming senior status on December 29, 1996. Vietor was succeeded in this position by Judge Robert Pratt. Vietor served as a senior judge until his death on July 23, 2016.[1][2]
