Harry F. Byrd, Jr. (b. December 20, 1914), was a member of the U.S. Senate from the state of Virginia from 1965 to 1983. He was originally appointed as a Democrat on November 12, 1965, to fill the vacancy left when his father, Harry Flood Byrd, Sr., resigned. From 1970 on he was re-elected as an independent.[1] Until his death on July 30, 2013, Byrd was the oldest living former senator.[2]
