Candidate Connection

Harry He participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on May 21, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Harry He's responses follow below.[1]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

My three highest priorities are campaign finance reform, healthcare reform, and environmental protections.[2][3]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

I am personally passionate about areas of public policy that address the issue of inequality. These issues include money in politics, healthcare, high education, the environment, and criminal justice reform. California is the most unequal state in the nation, according to a report done by Measure of America, and leaders in the state must take steps to address inequality.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[3]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Harry He answered the following:

Is there a book, essay, film, or something else that best describes your political philosophy?

Principles by Ray Dalio is a book that gives great insight on how I think and my decision making process. Ray Dalio's concept of radical transparency is something I believe in. To be an effective leader, one must not be shy to acknowledge problems and poor performance, radical transparency allows for this to happen.[3]
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
Integrity, consistency, and impartiality. These characteristics make it possible for a representative to get the best results for his/her community.[3]
What legacy would you like to leave?
I would like to leave a legacy of being known as a person that changed the way people thought of politics. I think right now people see politics as some foreign institution that they cannot participate in, but it doesn't need to be that way. I want to see a future where many believe they can not only participate, but run for office as well. Having many people run for office, and having competitive elections will produce the best leaders for our communities. In turn all the important issues, like healthcare, the environment, education, childcare, and criminal justice reform will benefit from having the most effective leaders working on them. This is why I am pushing hard for real campaign finance reform that lifts the financial barriers to entry that many people face when running for office. Our democracy should be strong because we are a democracy of people, not a democracy of dollars.[3]
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at that time?
The first historical event I remember is 9/11, I was six years old at that time. Reflecting on this event reminds me of the importance of working together as Americans and Californians to ensure a brighter future. Regardless of political labels, or party affiliation, all Californians want a brighter future for our state and we should look past our differences to come together and build that brighter future.[3]
Both sitting legislators and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you’ve heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?
I was speaking at a local community college and I had ended up having a conversation with a young woman who was passing by. It turns our she was a victim of sexual harassment and it struck me as incredibly shocking as how regular she describes her experiences with sexual harassment. This only reaffirmed my strong stance on ending sexual harassment, women and other victims cannot suffer silently, we must be forceful in ending this issue now.[3]
