Candidate Connection

Harry Kozlowski participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on September 28, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Harry Kozlowski's responses follow below.[1]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

Marijuana legalization and taxation, Sports betting and blocking school vouchers, aka diverting public education funds to private schools.[2][3]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

New Hampshire, lacking a sales or income tax, and with some of the highest property taxes in the nation, needs new revenue sources. Legalized marijuana and sports betting are two prime sources for new funds. Also with 3 neighboring states about to begin legal marijuana sales, it's critical New Hampshire not fall behind. Also I want to defend public education from the "false choice" of vouchers, which are really meant to siphon pubic dollars to private and home schools.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[3]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Harry Kozlowski answered the following:

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow and why?

I admire Barney Frank and his direct, no-nonsense way of legislating. I'm ready to talk and find common ground as long as the other side is serious and equally ready to give some ground.[3]
Is there a book, essay, film, or something else that best describes your political philosophy?
Not really, other than I have a low tolerance for BS.[3]
What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?
A willing to talk and be willing to craft legislation where everybody gets something but no one gets everything. Also someone who will be realistic with voters and not make promises that can't be achieved.[3]
What qualities do you possess that would make you a successful officeholder?
I have no aspirations for higher office. So I don't care about currying favor. I just want to do what's right.[3]
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
Understand it's the people's money you are spending and you better choose wisely. But also understand that money does need to be spent and society can't function without competent government.[3]
What legacy would you like to leave?
Never thought about legacy.[3]
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at that time?
Kennedy assassination in 1963. I was 5 years old but I knew what happened was earth shaking.[3]
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
I was a janitor. I was 15 at the time. Lasted just a few months before I got a job at a department store.[3]
What happened on your most awkward date?
I've had some bad dates. The worst was when my girlfriend revealed to me that she was seeing someone else while we were out at dinner. I was 17.[3]
What is your favorite holiday? Why?
Christmas, but only as I remember it in my youth in Buffalo. The Polish meatless Wigilia dinner on Christmas Eve, Midnight mass, then drinks with friends and family after mass. Not into what the holiday has become, and certainly no fan or believer of the alleged "war on Christmas" being pushed by some.[3]
What is your favorite book? Why?
"1984." It's a warning of what can happen with people are immune to BS.[3]
If you could be any fictional character, who would you be?
Can't think of one.[3]
What is your favorite thing in your home or apartment? Why?
I own several original artworks. Nothing of great value or by anyone famous. But I think they are terrific.[3]
What was the last song that got stuck in your head?
Caroline Rose "Jeannie Becomes A Mom."[3]
What is something that has been a struggle in your life?
I grew up with a functioning level of A.D.D. For me multitasking is a way of making use of that need for distraction.[3]
(For non-Nebraska candidates) What do you consider the most important differences between the legislative chambers in your state?
New Hampshire actually has four levels of government: house, senate, the executive council and the governor. The executive council carries the most weight but the house can still impose it's will when it's united on legislation.[3]
Do you believe that it’s beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics?
It helps to have a understanding of the issues and how government works.[3]
What do you believe is the ideal relationship between the governor and the state legislature?
When all sides are working towards the good of the state and its people and not serving the agenda of moneyed interests.[3]
Do you believe it’s beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.
It helps to see your opponents as people and get to know them. It makes it easier to talk.[3]
What process do you favor for redistricting?
I would prefer an impartial panel. I'd even prefer redistricting by computer, ensuring balance of parties.[3]
If you are not a current legislator, are there certain committees that you would want to be a part of?
Ways and Means. Anything where new revenues can be developed.[3]
If you are a current legislator, what appealed to you about your current committees?
n/a[3]
If you are not currently a member of your party’s leadership in the legislature, would you be interested in joining the leadership? If so, in what role?
n/a[3]
Is there a particular legislator, past or present, whom you want to model yourself after?
n/a[3]
Are you interested in running for a different political office in the future?
No.[3]
Both sitting legislators and candidates for office hear many personal stories from the residents of their district. Is there a story that you’ve heard that you found particularly touching, memorable, or impactful?
I've gotten to know the Nepalese immigrant community in New Hampshire. These are people who came to the USA and have become successful and prosperous in a relatively short period of time. They are the textbook example of the American dream. I worry the recent push by ICE to make random stops is a violation of the civil rights of anyone who does not appear to be white, assuming illegality of anyone of color. This must stop.[3]
