Hawaiians elect Board of Education members for the last time

HONOLULU, Hawaii:In 2010, Hawaii elected its final set of candidates to the State Board of Education. Hawaii voters approved the Hawaii Board of Education Amendment, Question 1 (2010) on November 2nd. The measure amended the state constitution to allow the governor to nominate and, with the consent of the Senate, appoint members to the Board of Education. Additionally, the measure allowed for a period of transition between the election and the newly appointed board. Sworn in on November 29th, the 4 new members and 3 re-elected members will likely serve less than their normal 4-year term.[1]
While it is unclear if the current Board of Education will have time to institute any policy changes, the state has yet to formalize the new appointment process with implementing legislation. Prior to the election, the state legislature approved an advisory council to guide the nomination process. However, Governor Linda Lingle vetoed the measure on the grounds that the process did not bring transparency to the selection process.[1]
Hawaii Board of Education Amendment, Question 1 (2010) was passed decisively by Hawaii voters. Along with the changes already detailed, the measure would reduce the size of the board from 14 to 13 members.
