Hayward James "Jay" West is a judge on the 7th Judicial Circuit for Charles County in Maryland. He was appointed to the court by Governor Martin O'Malley on February 24, 2014.[1] West ran for re-election to the 7th Judicial Circuit in 2014, winning a new term expiring on December 31, 2029.[2]

Primary: He was successful in the Democratic primary on June 24, 2014, receiving 44.4 percent of the vote. He competed against Thomas R. Simpson, Jr. and incumbent Judge Jerome Richard Spencer. West cross-filed as a Republican and came in second in that primary, receiving 34.9 percent of the vote. 
General: He faced incumbent Judge Jerome Richard Spencer and Thomas R. Simpson, Jr. in the general election on November 4, 2014, and won with 39.9 percent of the vote. Candidates competed for two open seats. [2][3][4] 

Education

West received his undergraduate degree from the University of Maryland, College Park and his J.D. from the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law.[1]

Career

Before his appointment to the court, West practiced law with the firm of Alpert Schreyer, LLC.[1]
