Four seats on the Hazleton Area School Board were up for election on November 5, 2013. A primary election was held on May 21, 2013. A re-election was held on July 23, 2013 in two district areas to fix an error on the initial primary ballot.
Bob Mehalick, Clarence John, James Chapman and Jared M. O'Donnell defeated Carmella Yenkevich to win the four at-large seats.
About the district
Hazleton Area School District covers portions of Luzerne, Schuylkill, and Carbon Counties. The large district is centered on the city of Hazleton in Luzerne County. Hazleton had a population of 25,224 as of 2010.[1]
Demographics
According to the 2010 Census, the percentage of residents with a high school degree (77.9%) was lower than the state of Pennsylvania (87.9%) and the percentage of residents over 25 with a bachelor's degree or higher was also lower in Hazleton (12.2%) compared to the state overall (26.7%). The median household income in Hazleton was $33,964 compared to Pennsylvania's statewide median of $51,651.[1]

Method of board member selection
The Hazleton Area School Board consists of nine members elected to four-year terms. The members of the board are elected at-large by voters in the district. The primary election for the Hazleton Area School Board was held on May 21, 2013 and the general election was held on November 5, 2013. There was a re-election on July 23, 2013 in two district areas to fix an error on the initial primary ballot. The results of the July, 2013 election were added to the May primary election results. Four seats were up for election on November 5, 2013 and the remaining five seats were up for election on November 3, 2015.

The following candidates were on the ballot on November 5, 2013. The candidate field was narrowed in the May 21 primary. A re-election was held on July 23, 2013 in parts of Carbon and Schuylkill counties where former candidate Steve Hahn was listed on the ballot after withdrawing from the race. The results of the July 2013 election were added to the May primary election results.

No contributions or expenditures were reported during the election, according to the Pennsylvania Secretary of State.[3]
What was at stake?
Four seats on the Hazleton Area School Board, including board vice-president Bob Mehalick's seat, were at stake in the November election. Incumbents Bob Mehalick, Clarence John, and Carmella Yenkevich sought re-election while Steven Hahn did not.

Additional elections on the ballot
In addition to the school board race, residents of Hazleton Area School District had statewide, countywide, and citywide items on the ballot. They voted on a Judge of the Superior Court in a statewide race. There were various county races as well as mayoral, council, auditor, tax collector, supervisor, judge of election, and inspector of election races in various townships and boroughs.[5]
