Five seats on the Hazleton Area School District Board of Directors were up for general election on November 3, 2015. A primary election was held on May 19, 2015.

Incumbent Tony Bonomo won re-election to his seat. Challengers Bob Fiume, Marie Kay, Jackie Scarcella and Vincent Zola also joined the board. They defeated incumbent Robert Childs and challengers Casey Herseim, Lori Losen and Thomas Chirico.[1][2]

Bonomo advanced from both the Democratic and Republican primaries. Incumbents Brian Early, Robert Wallace and Marfay Yanac did not run for re-election. Carmella Yenkevich did not advance from the primary election. James Capriotti withdrew from the race in March 2015.[3]

Childs, Herseim and Losen ran as a slate of independent candidates. Chirico also filed as an independent candidate.[4]

The Hazleton Area School District is located in east-central Pennsylvania and covers portions of Luzerne, Schuylkill and Carbon Counties. The district is primarily in Luzerne County. The county seat of Luzerne County is Wilkes-Barre. According to the United States Census Bureau, Luzerne County was home to 320,103 residents in 2013.[5] In the 2012-2013 school year, the Hazleton Area School District was the 17th-largest school district in Pennsylvania and served 10,429 students.[6]

Demographics

According to the United States Census Bureau in 2013, Luzerne County underperformed compared to the rest of Pennsylvania in higher education achievement. The county had 21 percent of its residents over the age of 25 that had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to the state overall at 27.5 percent. The median household income in the county is $44,402 compared to Pennsylvania's statewide median of $52,548. The poverty rate of Luzerne County is 15.6 percent, while the state of Pennsylvania had a poverty rate of 13.7 percent.[5]

Voter and candidate information

The Hazleton Area Board of Directors consists of nine members elected to four-year terms. The members of the board are elected at-large by voters in the district. The primary election for the Hazleton Area Board of Directors was held on May 19, 2015, and the general election was held on November 3, 2015. Five seats were up for election on November 3, 2015.[2]

School board candidates had to file for this election with Luzerne County by March 10, 2015. Those wishing to run as an independent candidate had until August 3, 2015, to file. To vote in the primary election, residents had to register by April 20, 2015, and to vote in the general election, residents had to register by October 5, 2015.[8]
