Health and Human Services Committee, South Dakota State Senate
The Health and Human Services Committee is a standing committee of the South Dakota State Senate.
Per Section S4-1 of the Senate Rules, committees of the South Dakota State Senate are chosen by the President Pro Tempore and Minority Leader. Committees are assigned after the general election.[1] The President of the Senate is an ex officio member of the Legislative Procedure Committee and the President Pro Tempore is the chair of the Legislative Procedure Committee.[1] For all other standing committees, the member that is announced first serves as the chair of the committee.[2]

Function
The Legislator Reference Book defines the following subject areas for the Health and Human Services Committee:
| “ | Bills relating to health matters; mental illness; drugs; chemical dependency; the aged or disabled; the medical and nursing professions; medical malpractice; welfare assistance; regulation of hospitals and nursing homes; state institutions for the mentally ill, visually impaired, hearing disabled, or mentally challenged; spousal abuse; and abortion.[3][4] | ” |
