For the past 18 years, I have served as a Professor of History and Gender and Women’s Studies at Ohlone College in the East Bay. Students are at the center of all that I do. I am a beloved educator, recognized in 2020 as the Ohlone College “Faculty of the Year.”

As a former community college student, I know firsthand the impact of community college classes. I strive to find innovative ways to expand educational access and support students to realize their goals. In pursuit of this mission, I helped to co-found and now co-direct the Lytton Center for History and the Public Good. The Lytton Center supports students, faculty, and staff through programming and initiatives related to access, equity, inclusion, justice and service.

I am a faculty leader and organizer, having served in numerous leadership roles in both my labor union and the Faculty Senate. Through my previous experiences as chief negotiator for the faculty union and member of the Ohlone College Budget Committee, I have developed a keen understanding of the financial challenges facing community colleges.

Currently, City College is facing challenges such as low student enrollments, financial difficulties, and leadership issues. I have the expertise and experience needed to help CCSF overcome these obstacles and bring accountability, transparency, and stability to the institution.
  • Accreditation and Governance: The recent accreditation warning highlights the need for improved board governance. The college is on warning exclusively because of the actions of the current board of trustees. I will champion policies that enhance transparency, strengthen shared governance processes, and ensure the board's actions align with accreditation standards.
  • Financial Sustainability: I will focus on responsible fiscal oversight, exploring innovative funding sources, and ensuring efficient resource allocation to maintain CCSF's long-term viability without compromising educational quality, including fiercely advocating for Free City.
  • Enrollment Challenges: As a trustee, I will advocate for data-driven strategies to boost enrollment, such as expanding partnerships with local high schools and businesses, and enhancing marketing efforts to showcase CCSF's programs.
I am passionate about making high quality education accessible to all. Issues of access, equity, inclusion, justice, and service remain at the center of my advocacy work.
The characteristics that are most important for elected officials are transparency, accountability, honesty, and accessibility.
The Board of Trustees for City College is tasked with being the oversight body for the college. They are responsible for setting policies, financial management, hiring and evaluating the chancellor, strategic planning, ensuring compliance, facilitates oversight, and representing the public interest.
While this is not the first historical event I remember, it is the event that set me on a political path. When I was in high school I watched the Clarence Thomas confirmation hearings, including Anita Hill's testimony. I was utterly shocked that Thomas was confirmed, and it set me on a path into political activism.
What did the zero say to the eight?
Nice belt.

I strongly believe in financial transparency and accountability. The CCSF budget needs to be transparent, presented in a timely fashion that allows input from all stake holders, and in a format that is understandable to all.
