Heather Mitchell is running for the Virginia House of Delegates in the 2nd District because she knows what it means to serve our community. Heather is a Republican, the mother of three children and the spouse of an active duty prior-enlisted Marine Corps Officer.

Before her current marriage, Heather worked three jobs, as a single mother, in order to provide a quality life for her young daughter. Heather's determination for a better life led her down a path of service to our community and has fought to provide solutions to the issues facing our community. Heather has been a staunch advocate for members of the military and their families and, as the next Delegate, will continue fighting to provide resources and support. She has personally worked through many of the barriers military families face each day and will be a strong voice in Richmond for our veterans. For the past several years, Heather has worked on a grassroots level speaking with members of our community about their concerns and working with local officials to offer results-oriented solutions. As a Senior Aide to the Prince William County Board of Supervisors, Heather has a unique understanding of the transportation, education, and financial needs of our region. As the next Delegate, Heather will stand up for our community. She will be the fresh voice that we need. Together, we can move the 2nd District forward.

  • I will be a voice for the entire district, not just to those who vote for me.
  • I want to bring back the art of vigorous debate and may the best ideas win.
  • I will work with anyone on smart, positive solutions and I will never compromise my core beliefs.
Transportation is the number one issue in the district. With the 2nd District straddling two different transportation regions, having a vocal advocate emphasizing the importance of congestion mitigation along the Interstate 95 corridor, as well as the U.S. 1 corridor, is paramount. Our current representation in Richmond has failed the region on transportation. We need to do better finding real solutions for Route 1 congestion and create alternatives to I-95 and I-395. I would like to start by putting a lockbox on transportation funds so that monies designated for roads go to roads.
The person I look up to the most is my mom. My mom raised my sister and I by setting an example of working hard, never giving up, and always do your best. My parents divorced when I was eight and my mom found herself struggling financially trying to raise my sister and I. There were days that she didn't make lunch for herself because she wanted to make sure that my sister and I had a lunch for school. I remember when she pawned her high school class ring in order to buy groceries. She showed me that you do what is necessary even if it means giving up something you cherish. My mom also showed me that with hard work and determination that you can achieve anything you set your mind to. After my parents divorced, my mom was working an entry level job with the federal government, she was a GS-3 Clerk Typist. For years she was told by her boss that she would never be a supervisor because she was a woman. My mom used those condescending comments to fuel her determination to rise up in the ranks. When my mom retired she was a GS-13 Business Manager and ended up surpassing her old boss. Today, I am the mom to 3 wonderful kids and I am teaching them the lessons my mom taught me; work hard, never give up, and always do your best.
I have often been asked why I decided to run for public office. My response is simple.....shared experiences. We've all heard the old saying, "don't judge a person until you've walked a mile in their shoes". Well, I've worn a lot of different shoes over many miles, some that are broken in just right and some that were very uncomfortable. However, the ones that were the most painful ended up being the most beneficial...... beneficial in that the different challenges they presented at certain moments of my life taught me lessons you can only learn by living through them and surviving through to the other side. I think it's really important that the individual representing you...voting on your behalf...creating policies & laws that govern your life...well I think it's incredibly important that that person understands your daily life. It's easy for a politician to listen to your trials and tribulations, nod their heads, tell you they understand and that they know how you feel. Well, frankly a lot of them don't, they can't...few of them have stood in your shoes and fewer still have walked a mile in them.
My mom made this post this morning and it describes what is happening in Virginia:
"You came here from there because you didn't like there, and now you want to change here to be like there. We are not racist, phobic or anti whatever-you-are, we simply like here the way it is and most of actually came here because it is not like there, wherever there was. You are welcome here, but please stop trying to make here like there. If you want here to be like there you should not have left there to come here, and you are invited to leave here and go back there at your earliest convenience."
The ideal relationship between the current Virginia governor and the state legislature would be for the governor to not be in office. Ralph Northam has embarrassed our state enough, no need to drag us further down in the mud than he already has.
I was out door knocking in an older neighborhood and I met a lady who had lived there for 54 years; I was the first candidate to ever knock on her door. She was utterly dumbfounded that I was standing on her front porch asking what was most important to her. She felt that her elected officials didn't really care to hear what she had to say. A couple of days later, I was out knocking 3-4 streets over from where she lived. I knocked on a door and as I was introducing myself, the lady at the door looked over her shoulder and said, "Mom, is this the lady you were talking about?". Sure enough it was the same lady I had talked with the other night. This exchange really hammered home how important it is for any elected official to be out in the community talking with their constituents.
