Campaign themes

2016

Tarrant's campaign website highlighted the following issues:

Education

New York City public schools are in a precarious position right now. Literally at the mercy of the State Legislature we are fighting for the autonomy to education our children as we see fit, not as the State decides. We have to make sure we don't slide back to the corrupt local board system previously in place and we have to continue to work to get funds mandated by the courts INTO the classrooms and supporting our children. Our children deserve an education that supports their innate creativity. Whether that creativity expresses itself in Art or Science, our public schools should have the resources to support them.

Mass Transit

One of the beauties of Harlem is how accessible we are to the entire city. The MTA however raises fares and makes irresponsible spending decisions, taking money directly out of our pockets. Compound this with NYPD policing of public transit and the problem becomes a much larger issue. We can not let the MTA make huge expenditures, in the Hundreds of Thousands of dollars today for technology that will be obsolete tomorrow. In the meantime the money has been taken OUT of our pocket and into someone else's for a short term benefit. I'd rather spend 30 more seconds getting on the bus than have to choose between train fare and lunch. I am confident we can find solutions that allow both.

Housing

There's hardly a more pressing issue in Harlem than housing. We've already lost more than 100,000 affordable housing units - I have watched this quite literally tear families apart. People who used to have the foundational network of family nearby now have to travel to get the same support. We have to focus on preserving our communities in the face of rapid change.

Social Justice

For too long I've seen how my community members are treated by law enforcement. Every man in my community should not know how it feels to see the inside of some kind of cell yet they do. Almost to a man.

Black Lives Matter. Say it again, Black. Lives. Matter. ALL Black lives matter. This should not be a controversial statement. We need to end racially lopsided sentencing practices. It should be possible to work with law enforcement to understand our community to better work together in ending gun violence.

Public services / Mental Health

The Human Resources Administration seems less interested in helping people get a hand up and more interested in getting a cheap workforce. We need to change the dysfunctional distribution of benefits and let people get a helping hand without spending days and days in bureaucracy. Our community is sorely lacking in mental health resources for our community members. Whether it's people with chronic, debilitating illness, or just trying to make it though the day to day, there should be better access to mental health care.[1]
