Campaign themes
2016
Way's campaign website highlighted the following issues:
“ |
Environmental Reform: We should create a state fund to help cities like Austin acquire land for environmentally sensitive green belt lands. We need to clean up the conflicts of interest in Texas environmental agencies, which now mainly serve the interests of polluting industries. Education Reform: We need to make college affordable again for all families. Last year the Legislature funded 23% less per Texas college student than it did six years ago. That is unacceptable. We also need to invest in high quality pre-K programs. It’s time to reform our state’s school funding system. Increase state funding for public schools to provide a high quality and equitable education for all Texas children, and relieve pressures on local property taxpayers. Economic Fairness and Reform: We should enact a fair minimum wage in Texas, so that working families can afford to live decently. Guarantee equal pay for equal work for women. End the crony capitalism at the Capitol, where the well connected get special favors that most taxpayers and small businesses don’t get. Increase job training and job opportunities for the underemployed. It’s Time for Fundamental Political Reform: The Texas Legislature should endorse a U.S. Constitutional amendment to overturn the infamous “Citizens United” court decision. We must ban all corporate money and anonymous “super pacs” that are corrupting politics and putting government up for sale. Keep Guns Out Of Our Classrooms: As a University of Texas law professor, Heather Way and other teachers face the prospect of people carrying guns into their classrooms, potentially harming fellow students. It’s time to enact sane gun control laws that will protect us in public spaces and keep weapons out of the hands of criminals and the mentally ill.[1] |
