Career
DeVos received a degree in early education from Calvin College in 1947. She worked as a teacher until 1953.[1]
From 1971 to 1991, DeVos was a member of the board for the Grand Rapids Symphony. Donations from the DeVos family in the 1970s contributed to a major overhaul of the symphony's performance space, which was renamed DeVos Hall in honor of DeVos and her family.[2][3][4]
DeVos also donated to programs for women and children in the Grand Rapids area. She donated to the Butterworth Hospital in 1990.[3] The hospital expanded in 2006, and according to the hospital's website, "A $50 million gift by the children of Rich and Helen DeVos in honor of Helen jumpstarted a capital campaign that raised $103 million."[5] The expanded children's center was known as the Helen DeVos Children's Hospital.[5]
