Helen Nies

Helen Wilson Nies was a federal judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the United States Court of Customs and Patent Appeals. Nies died on August 7, 1996.

Federal judicial service

Nies was nominated to the Court of Customs and Patent Appeals by President Jimmy Carter. She was commissioned on June 18, 1980. She was reassigned to the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit when the Court of Customs and Patent Appeals was dissolved, receiving her commission on October 1, 1982. She served as the chief judge from 1990-1994. She assumed senior status on November 11, 1995, and served in that capacity until her death on August 7, 1996.[1][2]

Education

Nies earned her B.A. from the University of Michigan in 1946. She went on to receive her J.D.from the University of Michigan Law School in 1948.[1]

Professional career

Nies was an attorney for the Office of Alien Property of the U.S. Department of Justice, Washington, DC, from 1948 to 1951. She then worked as Branch Counsel for the U.S. Office of Price Stabilization in Washington, DC, from 1951 to 1952. From 1960 to 1980 she worked in private practice in Chicago and Washington, DC.[1]
