I grew up on Whidbey Island and have been a small business owner creating local jobs for 30 years. I've spent my entire adult life serving our community through church, as a PTA president, two terms on the South Whidbey School Board, and three terms (current position) as an Island County Commissioner.

Married for 38 years to Dave Johnson, I am the mother of four adult children and three grandchildren. My BA is from Mills College, Oakland CA, in Administration and Legal Processes. In the 1980's I was employed by a retailer and a member of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union.

I have a proven track record of representing the values of the Democrat Party. While president of the Washington State Association of Counties, I successfully worked across the aisle to address the needs of rural communities and as Washington State Senator, I will continue to work in a bi-artisan manner to focus on the needs of 10th Legislative District.
  • Affordable housing is needed for a resilient community.
  • Climate change is real and needs action now.
  • Access to healthcare services require new models to meet the needs of the community.
Housing that is available and affordable for our workers, families, seniors and veterans is necessary for community stability and economic growth. As Senator, I will work to ensure that the Growth Management Act better addresses rural and metropolitan housing needs while preserving our natural resources.

Climate change is real and is happening now. Government at every level must lead the way in reducing our carbon footprint, through both the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and more active sequestration. The State must continue to provide incentives for renewal energy and address the solid waste crisi of plastic packaging.

The 10th LD has a high percentage of seniors and veterans. We need a state-wide plan to improve access to physical and behavioral healthcare services and reduce prescription drug costs. New models need to be considered to segment the solutions.

I am a passionate advocate for working families, small businesses, and our rural communities.
As an elected official it is most important that I listen to the individuals, businesses and interest groups within the constituency, regardless of political party or caucus.
Government should be transparent and accountable to the public it serves. As an elected official, I am responsible to act in a manner that is honest and without bias while making a concerted effort to understand and represent all interest groups in the 10th Legislative District.
Yes. I believe that experience helps individuals learn how to work across the aisle and accomplish the needed legislation to meet community needs.
Washington State has the continuing challenge of managing and creating an economy that is thriving. This includes attracting and keeping businesses that bring family-supporting jobs, access to housing, an education system that supports future workers, and avialable health care (physical and behavioral), all while protecting the environment and our natural resources.
Yes The Legislative systems require broad support of any legislation. Building relationships helps to clarify and prioritize issues across party line.
