Three of the five seats on the Henry County Board of Education were up for general election on May 24, 2016. There was no primary. District 1 incumbent Pam Nutt defeated challenger John Dewberry Jr. Incumbent Josh Hinton won re-election in District 2 against challenger E.A. Dillard. Holly Carter Cobb won the District 3 seat against Eddie Tomlinson and Reginald Steele Jr.[1]

Voter and candidate information

The Henry County Board of Education consists of five members elected by district to four-year terms. The candidate filing period for Georgia school board candidates lasted from March 7, 2016, to March 11, 2016. Prospective candidates for nonpartisan offices submitted declarations of candidacy with their county election offices. The voter registration deadline for the general election was April 26, 2016.[2]

Georgia's spring nonpartisan school board elections in 2016 featured more districts with unopposed board seats than in 2014. Three of the state's 20 largest nonpartisan districts by enrollment (15 percent) had no contested seats in 2014. This rate doubled to six districts (30 percent) with entirely unopposed board seats in 2016. Ten districts saw fewer candidates per seat in 2016 than 2014, while nine districts had more candidates per seat and one district remained at the same number from year to year.

Henry County Schools is located in Henry County, Georgia. The county seat of Henry County is McDonough. Henry County was home to 211,128 residents in 2013, according to the United States Census Bureau.[4] The district was the seventh-largest school district in the state in the 2013–2014 school year and served 40,720 students.[5]

Demographics

Henry County underperformed in comparison to the state of Georgia in terms of higher education achievement in 2012. The United States Census Bureau found that 25.0 percent of Henry County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 27.8 percent for Georgia as a whole. The median household income in Henry County was $62,377, compared to $49,604 for the state of Georgia. The poverty rate in Henry County was 10.3 percent, compared to 17.4 percent for the entire state.[4]
