Campaign themes
2014
House explained his themes for the 2014 campaign in an interview with The Herald-Media:
“ |
1. In your opinion, what is the role of a school board member? I plan to be part of the team, taking my talents from IT and business and using it to complement talents of other board members. Working together collectively as a team, we make decisions that impact both school and student. Keeping our schools on track and holding our central office accountable for the outcome. We do this through working with our superintendent to establish the correct path for WCPS. 2. With the cost of brick-and-mortar schools so high, what should be done to accommodate student growth overall and in specific areas? We should look to maximize our current properties, especially inventory of facilities underutilized to leverage those assets as additional classrooms. We could shift our Academy programs into some of these sites that have been developed specifically for those programs. We could also consider a hybrid learning environment that blends brick and mortar classroom instruction time with online learning, group projects and individual work allowing for a better teacher-to-student ratio in the classroom. 3. What more should Washington County Public Schools do to prevent bullying, including cyberbullying? We need to be proactive within our schools evaluating programs and determine effectiveness. We need to continue effective resources to reach our younger grades to achieve the proper mindset. WCPS has in place monitoring service for social media and texts when on property geared towards improving school security. This could potentially be utilized to intercede on bullying behavior. The most important step for WCPS in preventing bullying is to promote proper parent engagement at home. 4. What can the school system do to improve literacy among elementary school students? The schools are making the effort. The challenge is preventing summertime reading loss and support from home. From attending the Hagerstown Rotary Literacy Summit in early May, the statistics reveal the challenge. Families need to engage their children to instill a desire to read. I feel the school board needs to continue to embrace community efforts to promote better family support and address summertime reading loss. 5. Do you have any concerns about the Common Core State Standards, now referred to as Maryland's College and Career-Ready Standards? Why or why not, and what could the local board do about any concerns that you might have? I have grave concerns about the federal government edict to the states. Necessary funds for WCPS operation is tied to adopting these standards and curriculum, so it will be implemented. Our community knows how best to address our needs. While the goal is to challenge critical thinking, it abandons the students' traditional support structure for resources with more standardized tests. I will advocate the need to return education decisions to local government without encumbrances.[2] |
