SALT LAKE CITY, Utah: Gov. Gary Herbert has called for the Utah State Legislature to convene on July 17 for a special session to discuss the impending investigation of John Swallow, Utah's attorney general.[1]
The session is in response to a newly created House committee that will be conducting the investigation. Before the committee begins, the legislators must grant subpoena power and proper exemptions to Utah's open meetings act. According to a letter from House Speaker Becky Lockhart these exemptions are necessary, "You voted to create an investigative committee, and in order for that investigation to be successful, there are a couple of things that need to be addressed in statute."[2]
To accommodate both of these needs, two amendments would need to be passed on Wednesday. These include an amendment that would allow members to practice law without a license, for the purpose of this investigation, and an amendment that outlines and explicitly states the powers the committee has during the investigation.[3]
