Hinton Mitchem
Hinton Mitchem is a former Democratic member of the Alabama State Senate, representing the District 9 from 1978 to 2010. Previously, he was a member of the Alabama House of Representatives from 1975 through 1978.
Senator Mitchem was elected President Pro Tempore of the Senate on January 9, 2007, by a margin of 18-17 over the efforts of a coalition of Republicans and disaffected Democrats to elect leadership that would be more favorable to Gov. Riley. Mitchem resigned this post on February 5, 2009.

On November 5, 2002, Mitchem won re-election to the 9th District Seat in the Alabama State Senate, defeating opponent Doris Edmonds (R).[3]
