I'm a fierce, passionate, kind advocate for kids, women, the environment, animals and others who haven't gotten a fair shake in life. I've spent my life as a social justice attorney, Chief Innovations Officer, executive and community activist. I'm a proud mom of 4 great kids, and two dogs. I grew up in a large, loving lower middle class home. We had everything we needed, but not much that we just wanted.

I started out as an economist and quickly realized I wanted to spend my life fighting for justice. I went to law school, started the first animal rights law firm in the country, then, with Doris Day launched an animal protection lobbying firm. In my community I've fought for kids as PTA President three times over, in one of the most diverse school systems in America. I've worked on environmental issues in my community and come up with innovative and humane solutions to wildlife. I've worked as a grassroots political advocate and helped organize hundreds of women to help flip Virginia blue. Since then I've worked as a legislative director in Richmond and helped lobby for Virginia to become the 38th state to ratify the ERA.

I'm courageous, innovative and strategic. I'd like to use my experience, skills and passion to serve the constituents of the 38th District of Virginia.
  • I'm an activist, attorney and champion for human and animal rights.

  • I'm innovative, strategic and have a history of success with transformational change.
  • I'm reliable, dedicated and earnest.
Education, Employment and Unions, Equity and Justice, including women's reproductive rights, equity in health care and criminal justice reform, and the Environment, including climate change and protection of animals and our planet.
The most important characteristic for an elected official is empathy. From that every other important principle flows from integrity, to honesty to passion for the job.
I'm bold, kind, passionate, creative and strategic. I like working with people and puzzling through how to get people from "no" to "yes." I've spent my career working with people and organizations that don't agree with me to make significant changes for animals. I know how to negotiate, when to push and when to fold. And I don't take "no"for an answer.
The core responsibilities are to be accessible in meaningful ways to your constituents, to listen to those with whom you disagree, to give as much attention to those without money, power and/or lobbyists as those who do and to use the privilege of office to push as hard a s possible for meaningful change, without pushing ideas so radical, that legislative initiatives become folly.
Another responsibility is to be a team player with other representatives, except in cases of extreme importance and disagreement, so that the Democratic caucus, together, wields as much power to do good as possible. "If you want to go fast go alone. If you want to go far, go together."
My first job was a waitress in a small diner in rural Pennsylvania. I was a sophomore in high school, saving money for a year abroad as an exchange student to Sweden. I learned how much work it takes to earn money, how to appreciate and deal with all kinds of customers, and how to navigate employment with a difficult boss. I also learned how to make a great potato salad.
Yes and no. I believe that the people are best served with representatives from many different life experiences, passions and points of view. Certainly the legislature benefits from a percentage of officials with a long history of service. It also benefits greatly from an infusion of a broad spectrum of life and professional experiences coming together to listen. With a diverse body, in terms of personal and professional experience, as well as time in office, the legislature will make decisions more reflective of the populous.
I believe it is critical to build relationships in order to do the job. In recent years we have become so polarized and it is damaging to our democracy. We need to listen more and appreciate other's point of view even when diametrically opposed to our own. We do that best with people with whom we have relationships.
I favor a procedure as far removed from currently elected representatives as possible. I would also prefer a commission removed from input from either of the two parties, but rather citizens active and engaged in their community but free of any political ties.
What do you get when you cross a joke with a rhetorical question?
