As a child, I attended USD 259 schools; I’m the mom of a current USD 259 student, a wife of nearly two decades, and a businesswoman. I oversee the contact center and interactive services teams at Meritrust Credit Union as the Director of Member Support Services. I have over 20 years of customer service and financial institution experience. I have a passion for people. I strive to advocate for others, using my voice to stand up against the injustices faced by those whose voices can't be heard.
  • Recruiting and retaining high-quality educators
  • USD-wide access to mental health opportunities
  • Rooting all decisions in equity, inclusion, and empathy
Nothing is more important to me than making sure my child is safe, feels accepted and knows that he is loved. This love and acceptance I feel for him extends to all children, especially those who don’t have parents or guardians who love and accept them for who they are, regardless of what society says they should be. I am passionate about providing children with opportunities to feel safe and secure while learning; removing this barrier can allow kids to thrive and to become what they choose to be.
I look(ed) up to Ruth Bader Ginsburg, former Supreme Court Justice. She was a strong independent woman, a feminist, and advocate for equality. I aspire to be like her in my personal and professional endeavors. She said "Women belong in all places where decisions are being made. It shouldn't be that women are the exception."
Elected officials should be authentic, compassionate, and care about doing what's right.
I strive to be an inspiring leader and actively participate in planning for a successful future. I understand education today is more complex than ever before and past approaches may not meet today’s challenges. However, I am eager to invest the time and energy required for meetings, phone calls, conversations, visits to schools, professional development seminars and learning workshops. Most importantly, I will be accessible. I will listen for real consensus and not confuse a few vocal constituents with a majority feeling and I will be responsive to the human needs of individuals and groups. I am a team player and am willing to support group decisions.
I want my legacy to be that I've helped to improve representation and quality of life for people of color, the LGBTQIA+ community, and individuals who live with disabilities.
I know that many wonderful and terrible events have occurred during my lifetime but the one I most clearly recall is September 11, 2001. I was 18 years old, fresh out of high school and had just started college at Butler County Community College. I had just made it to the college campus in the early morning and a complete stranger stopped me on the sidewalk to tell me the news of what had happened.
My first professional job was working the front desk at El Dorado Health Club when I was in high school. I worked there from the time I was 15 through graduation when I was 18 years old. My responsibilities included greeting members, signing up new members and keeping the machines and exercise equipment clean. I loved having the opportunity to build relationships and watch the members grow in their confidence and strength over time.
My all time favorite book series is The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, by Douglas Adams, but the book I love most is called The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul by the same author. It's a book about a detective named Dirk Gently who is terrible at his job but he seems to do a good job in spite of himself. I love the book because of the character Douglas Adams created. My all time favorite quote comes from this book: "I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think I have ended up where I intended to be."
A week ago my spouse and I drove past The Wave in Wichita where a concert was underway. The song Teenage Dirtbag, originally by the band Wheatus, was being performed and it's been in my head ever since.
The school board is responsible for maintaining, developing and operating local schools within the district. The school board, working alongside teachers, administrators, community members and students create a vision for public education in the community. They are responsible for hiring and evaluating the superintendent of schools, adopting policies and monitoring district finances, among other responsibilities.
School board members represent the best interests of parents and families of the communities they serve.
I will strive to be an inspiring leader and actively participate in planning for a successful future. I understand education today is more complex than ever before and past approaches may not meet today’s challenges. However, I am eager to invest the time and energy required for meetings, phone calls, conversations, visits to schools, professional development seminars and learning workshops. Most importantly, I will be accessible to those I am committed to serve.
I love to make connections and build relationships. I don't tolerate hate so it will be important to me that our community welcomes and appreciates the diversity and uniqueness of our students and educators of USD 259.
I believe diversity, and inclusion are very important; the faculty, staff, and administration in the school district should reflect the different cultures and backgrounds of the communities in which we serve.
I believe in USD-wide access to mental health support. This includes access to counselors, tools, and resources that will allow students, faculty, and staff the opportunity to grow and succeed as students and educators.
Good teaching happens when students and educators are engaged in the learning process. The love educators have for teaching their students is admirable and I'll support initiatives that help recruit passionate and invested educators.
I think technical training is important. In addition, while visiting with my child, he made a recommendation that for the students who love writing and or are in honors English Language Arts could be provided with opportunities to write for bigger things; such as writing an article or paragraph for the community news prints, university campus news, and local high schools "drama"or other school updates.
Proper funding is essential in order for students to be successful. Seeking federal and state grants for supplemental revenue to support innovative educational initiatives.
Schools should be places that children, educators and administrators feel safe. This means that they shouldn't be worried about bullying, bullets, or the risk of exposure to Covid-19.
I believe in USD-wide access to mental health support. This includes access to counselors, tools, and resources that will allow students, faculty, and staff the opportunity to grow and succeed as students and educators.
Technology has been evolving for years and is going to continue to be an integral part of our collective futures. As time moves forward, more schools will use it on a daily basis.
First and foremost, we need to focus on keeping our kids in an in-person learning model. This means we must establish, maintain and enforce ongoing safety guidelines. Given new evidence on the B.1.617.2 (Delta) variant, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) has updated the guidance for fully vaccinated people. CDC recommends universal indoor masking for all teachers, staff, students, and visitors to K-12 schools, regardless of vaccination status. In addition to physical health, we must prioritize emotional wellness support for our students, faculty and staff.
As a parent I understand the importance of ensuring the concerns I have for my child's safety and education are heard. It will be my responsibility to listen to other parents share what's important to them and to include them in any initiatives we have to support the youth in our community.
