Horace Ward
Horace Taliaferro Ward was an Article III federal judge for the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia. He joined the court in 1979 after being nominated by President Jimmy Carter. Ward was a judge serving on senior status when he decided to retire. Ward died on April 23, 2016.[1]
Early life and education
A native Georgian, Ward graduated from Morehouse College with his bachelor's degree in 1949 and from Atlanta University with his Master of Arts degree in 1950. Ward later graduated from the Northwestern University School of Law with his juris doctorate degree in 1959. Ward served in the US Army as a Corporal on Active Duty from 1953 to 1955. Ward was also an academic instructor at Arkansas AM&N from 1950 to 1951 and at Alabama State from 1951 to 1953 and 1955 to 1956.
Professional career
After law school, Ward became a Claims authorizer for the US Social Security Administration in Chicago from 1959 to 1960. In 1960, Ward moved to Georgia and became a Private practice attorney licensed in the State of Georgia from 1960 to 1974. In addition to his private practice work, Ward was also a part-time Deputy city attorney for the City of Atlanta from 1969 to 1970 and was also a part-time Assistant county attorney in Fulton County from 1970 to 1975. Ward was also a elected member of the Georgia State Senate from 1965 to 1974. Ward started his judicial career as a Judge handling civil court cases in Fulton County from 1974 to 1977 then from 1977 to 1979 became a Superior Court judge for Georgia.
Judicial nominations and appointments
Northern District of Georgia
Ward was nominated by President Jimmy Carter on November 1, 1979 to a new judgeship created by 92 Stat. 1629 which was approved by Congress.[2] Ward was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on December 5, 1979 on a Senate vote and received commission on December 6, 1979. Ward later assumed senior status on December 31, 1993. Ward died on April 23, 2016.[1]
