An effort to recall three members of the Houghton Lake Community School Board of Education in Roscommon County, Michigan was launched in May 2012.[1] The recall effort was abandoned in August 2012.[2] The school board members who faced recall were Tom Dean, Dave Johnson, and Tim Scherer.

Reasons for recall

Mark Souder initiated the recall effort. The reason for recall listed on all three recall petitions was: "Violation of board by-law 0166 that states the order of business may be altered and items added at any meeting by a majority vote of the members present. On 3/26/12 when a motion was added and carried without properly being added to the agenda without the majority vote.”[1]

Path to the ballot

The recall petitions were approved for circulation at a clarity hearing on May 21. Recall organizers needed to submit 1,613 signatures on each petition by August 3 in order to force a recall election.[1] Recall supporters failed to submit sufficient signatures by the deadline, and the recall effort came to an end.[2]
