Details: In California, there are two types of legislation that citizens can initiate—statute and constitutional. Signatures are collected to place initiatives on the ballot, and more signatures are required for constitutional amendments than statutes.

Since 1912, voters in California have approved 136 ballot initiatives, including 79 statutes and 57 constitutional amendments. Voters have rejected 251 ballot initiatives, including 133 statutes and 117 constitutional amendments. Overall, 35 percent of ballot initiatives were approved, and 65 percent were defeated.
