Howard A. Dawson, Jr. was an Article I federal judge for the United States Tax Court. Dawson served two terms on the United States Tax Court before taking senior status. He was nominated to the first term by President John F. Kennedy (D) and the second by President Richard Nixon (R).[1][2] Dawson served as a senior status judge until he passed away July 15, 2016.[3]

Education

Dawson earned his B.S. from the University of North Carolina in 1946 and his J.D. from the George Washington University School of Law in 1949.[2]

Military

Dawson served in the U.S. Army Finance Corps from 1943 to 1945. He spent two years in the European Theater during World War II. After his active time he served in the Reserves as a Captain in the Finance Corps.[2]

Judicial nominations and appointments

Tax Court

Dawson was nominated to the United States Tax Court by President John F. Kennedy (D) on August 21, 1962. He was reappointed on June 2, 1970, by President Richard Nixon (R). After his second term, which ended on June 1, 1985, he retired. Dawson served as chief judge of the court from July 1, 1973, to June 30, 1977, and July 1, 1983, to June 1, 1985. He was recalled to senior status in 1990.[2] He served as a senior judge until his death on July 15, 2016.[3]
