Political career
Ohio Public Utilities Commission (2016)
Petricoff was appointed to the Ohio Public Utilities Commission by Gov. John Kasich (R) on June 23, 2016, to complete the unfinished term of Andre Porter, set to expire on April 10, 2020. Porter, a registered Republican, resigned on May 20, 2016, to pursue a career in the private sector.
Upon appointing Petricoff, Kasich said, "With decades of experience in utility and energy law, Howard Petricoff is exceptionally well versed in how these issues impact economic growth and job creation. I look forward to the expertise he will bring to the commission." Petricoff's appointment is subject to approval by the Republican-controlled Ohio State Senate.[2][4]
Confirmation
Some Republican senators, including Senate President Keith Faber, have questioned Petricoff's ability to remain neutral on the commission. Sen. Faber released a statement saying:
“ | Senators have expressed some concerns about Mr. Petricoff's inability to hear many of the cases pending before the commission due to conflicts of interest involving past legal work, as well as raised questions about his ability to make neutral decisions given his past activism.[4][5] | ” |
A number of organizations involved in the Ohio energy sector have offered praise for Petricoff, including the National Federation of Independent Business, which issued a statement saying:
“ | Residential ratepayers have their interests championed by the Ohio Consumers' Council, and large commercial users have their minions of lawyers advocating on their side. Ohio entrepreneurs, the small commercial class ratepayers, need someone like Mr. Petricoff, who grew up working in his family's small business and understands utility rates are an important cost of doing business, who recognizes utility costs should not be disproportionately born by them.[4][5] | ” |
