Howard VanBenthuysen was the presiding judge of the superior courts in Franklin and Grand Isle counties, Vermont. He also served on the civil division of the Orleans County superior court. VanBenthuysen was appointed to his seat on July 22, 1997.[1][2][3][4] He retired from the court on April 1, 2021.

Education

VanBenthuysen graduated with a B.A. cum laude from the University of Vermont in 1973. He went on to receive a master's of education from Colorado State University in 1976. He received his J.D. cum laude from Albany Law School in 1982. He was author and editor of the Albany Law Review.[4]

Military service

VanBenthuysen was deployed to Afghanistan in 2010 as a member of the Vermont National Guard, but rejoined the courts in April 2012. He was also deployed to Iraq. Along with the National Guard, VanBenthuysen is a veteran of the United States Coast Guard.[5][4]
