Hugh Holston is an at-large member of the Greensboro City Council in North Carolina. He assumed office in 2021. His current term ends in 2025.

Biography

Hugh Holston earned a bachelor's degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1982. His career experience includes working as a nonprofit executive. Holston previously held leadership roles at Wells Fargo, AT&T, Lincoln Financial, and the Old North State Medical Society. Holston’s civic and community involvement includes affiliations with the College Foundation of North Carolina Inc., North Carolina for Community and Justice (NCCJ), the African American Leadership Group of the United Way of Greater Greensboro, FaithAction International, and Preservation Greensboro, Inc. He has also served in leadership roles such as chair of the Greensboro Planning and Zoning Commission, chair of the Greensboro Board of Adjustment, chair of Communities in Schools of Greater Greensboro, president of the AT&T Pioneers Volunteer Network, trustee of the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics, and as a member of the board of directors of the International Civil Rights Center and Museum.[2]

Hugh Holston is a native of Fayetteville, NC and is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration.

He currently serves on the Greensboro City Council as a Councilmember, At-Large.

Hugh also serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the Greensboro Housing Coalition advocating for fair, safe, healthy, and affordable housing for low-to-moderate income families. Previously, Hugh has worked in leadership positions with Wells Fargo, AT&T, Lincoln Financial, and Old North State Medical Society.

He currently serves in leadership roles on boards with a variety of local, regional, and statewide organizations to include the College Foundation of North Carolina Inc., North Carolina for Community and Justice (NCCJ), the African American Leadership Group of the United Way of Greater Greensboro, FaithAction International, and Preservation Greensboro, Inc. Hugh has been named to the Black Business Ink Power 100 for North Carolina and was awarded the Pinnacle Award for leadership excellence from the Rosa Foundation.

1. ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT - Continuing the expansion of economic development in our community so our residents have to opportunity to make a good living for themselves and their families. In addition to ‘big businesses,’ we must also include a focus on small businesses; which are truly the heart of any successful community.

2. PUBLIC SAFETY - Ensuring that our residents are, and feel, safe, protected, and respected with engaged public safety organizations (e.g. police, fire, 911, etc).

3. HOUSING - Driving a varied housing stock that includes all types of housing, attainability, and density levels to include rental units, homes for purchase, options for college students, senior housing, etc. that support our community needs.
The ability to listen, empathize, have a curiosity to inquire, take steps to drive change, follow-up for understanding, and communicate along the way
Championing a $440,000 budget line item to support the Tenant, Education, Advocacy, and Mediation (TEAM) project to provide funding for legal representation for tenants facing the eviction process. Typically, 90% of tenants facing the eviction process do not have legal representation. The TEAM project addresses that need.
