I am a proud first-generation immigrant from Kenya. I have enthusiastically called Minnesota home for over 20 years. I graduated from Robbinsdale Cooper High School and earned three bachelor’s degrees (International Business, International Relations, and Reconciliation Studies) and a master’s degree (MBA) from Bethel University.

My father came to America as a student in the early 1980s. After graduating, as a Black man in the south, he could not find work. He eventually relocated to Minnesota in the late 1980s hoping to find employment. For 11 years, he fought tirelessly with the broken immigration system to the point where the entire family had almost given up hope. Having only 48 hours until my family was to be deported to Kenya, Senator Paul Wellstone came to our aid and lobbied for our case. In the last few hours, the court overturned our deportation order. Senator Wellstone proved to be a man of the people. The Senator is the reason my family now calls America home. He inspired me to run for Senate because, I truly believe when good people run, lives are changed for the better.

I believe in good governance that exudes integrity, accountability, transparency and equity. Those values have become the driving force behind my experience as a community leader, organizer, and promoter of civic engagement. I have proven to be a trusted community partner and have collaborated with Brooklyn Center, Brooklyn Park, Hennepin County, and the State of Minnesota.
  • The core message of our campaign is very simple…we are STRONGER TOGETHER! I believe in good governance that exudes integrity, accountability, transparency, equity, and empathy. TOGETHER, we can do better for our families, our schools, our small businesses and our community. With nearly a decade of community work experience and my family’s journey in this country as first generation immigrants, I know what it takes to get this community on track, advocate tirelessly, find solutions, and get things done.
  • My campaign team is strong, active, and hard working. We have a field plan that covers every precinct in our district. Voter contact, mobilization, and community engagement are high priorities for us and target the most disenfranchised members of our community. We will accomplish this with our door knocking plan of 6 nights/week, phone banking, mailers, attending community events, and many conversations rooted in a desire to understand and listen well. We have also launched Kitchen table conversations and community backyard bonfire where we have neighbors host events and invite neighbors to get to know each other and learn about our campaign. We plan to win the election by meeting voters where they are. That means meeting them at the door,
  • The change we want to see cannot come if we stand on the side lines. We must participate and that starts with civic engagement at all levels. I am running to fight for a future where better quality of life is accessible to all residents not only in my district but the entire state of Minnesota.
Public safety is much broader than law enforcement alone. I will support measures that prevent crime by enriching our youth and communities with ample services and resources. Our court and post-incarceration systems also need comprehensive support and funding.

Access to health care and mental health care is a human right and should be affordable, safe, comprehensive, and obtainable. I’m committed to holding insurance companies and the pharmaceutical industry to ethical practices, and exploring the expansion of Medicare and Medicaid programs.

Education/Housing/Economy are all areas that are continuing to suffer with instability and the negative effects of the pandemic. These areas need legislative attention, examination, and action.

Scorecards

See also: State legislative scorecards and State legislative scorecards in Minnesota

A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.

Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.
