Campaign themes

2013

Nguyen’s website highlighted the following campaign themes:[3]

  • Economy

Excerpt: "Supporting businesses with real growth opportunities creates jobs. Pieces of the puzzle: a world-class international airport, diversity of cultures and skill sets, entrepreneurial spirit and ideas, and recent trade agreements. We need to get capital funding to our entrepreneurs and small business owners"

  • Education

Excerpt: "Our children deserve equal access to Pre-K education and the best K-12 education, the foundation of Northern Virginia’s future workforce. As a legislator, I will invest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) programs to spur greater interest by K-12 students in the STEM professions to ensure we have a qualified workforce that meets Northern Virginia's needs."

  • Transportation

Excerpt: "Getting our roads completed in a timely fashion. Shorter construction timelines result in less hours lost in traffic. Imagine what we can do with the time. We can spend time with our families, build and grow our businesses, or take a deep breath and enjoy our lives without an extra stress."

This exurban Washington, DC, district re-elected incumbent James LeMunyon (R) with a comfortable 59 percent of the vote in 2011, and Governor Bob McDonnell (R) won 58 percent of the vote here in 2009. However, President Barack Obama (D) earned 53 percent of the vote here in 2012, suggesting that the district could elect a Democratic candidate. Nguyen made several specific pitches for high turnout among the local Vietnamese-American community, but LeMunyon won in a tough race as recently as 2009.[5]
