Hunter Roberts is the South Dakota Secretary of Agriculture and Natural Resources. He assumed office on April 19, 2021. His current term ends on January 4, 2027.
Gov. Kristi Noem (R) appointed him secretary when she announced her plan to merge the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources on August 27, 2020. Roberts assumed office on the day of the merger: April 19, 2021.[1][2]
Roberts previously served as the South Dakota Secretary of Environment and Natural Resources from 2019 to 2021. He also concurrently served as interim South Dakota Secretary of Agriculture from 2020 to 2021.[3][4]
Biography
Roberts, a 3rd-generation public servant from Pierre, South Dakota, started his career in government in 2007 as the assistant state energy director. He was then promoted to state energy policy director in 2008. After he served in the role for six years, he became a policy advisor to then-Governor Dennis Daugaard (R) in 2014. Roberts served as the deputy secretary of labor and regulation prior to his appointment as the secretary of environment and natural resources.[5]

Roberts worked as a policy advisor to then-Governor of South Dakota Dennis Daugaard on issues including transportation, agriculture, energy, environment, land management, and outdoor resources.[5]
